FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships are updating “Engaging Faith-Based and Community Organizations: Planning Considerations for Emergency Managers.” Originally published in June 2018, this document outlines best practices for engaging faith-based and community organizations before, during, and after disasters to help jurisdictions improve their resilience and emergency management capabilities. These organizations can also be significant force multipliers, particularly in reaching high-risk and historically underserved community members.
The update to “Engaging Faith-Based and Community Organizations: Planning Considerations for Emergency Managers” will include lessons learned from real-world events, updates to FEMA programs, additional resources, and recommendations from the public and key stakeholders. FEMA will host several 60-minute listening sessions to provide an overview of the existing 2018 document and include a facilitated discussion to gather feedback on areas to improve the guide. To learn more about the update effort and listening sessions, please visit FEMA.gov.

The MDHHS Test to Treat (T2T) program was recently recognized by FORUM as a 2023 Disruptive Tech Program Award winner for its partnership with the National Emergency Tele-Critical Care Network (NETCCN). This national award recognizes disrupters that are leading and transforming federal information technology. T2T removed barriers and improved access to outpatient COVID-19 treatments, and MDHHS worked with NETCCN to provide on-site telehealth services for rapid access to no-cost COVID-19 antiviral medications for those who tested positive.
Michigan was the first state to launch the federal T2T initiative at a neighborhood-based test site. T2T highlighted the reach and impact of virtual health care in communities.
Congratulations to the MDHHS Medical Countermeasure Team, and our own Theresa Jenkins, within the Bureau of Emergency Preparedness EMS and Systems of Care and the COVID-19 Testing, Collection and Coordination Team within the Bureau of Infectious Disease Prevention for their partnership and teamwork launching the T2T program.
