Dear Immunization Partners,
Please review the following COVID-19 vaccine update regarding updates to COVID-19 vaccinations.
J&J/JANSSEN INVENTORY UPDATE
- Supplies of J&J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine in the field will expire between now and the end of May.
- J&J/Janssen vaccine is no longer available for ordering. Supply of J&J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine is depleted. Ordering of the vaccine was disabled on February 22, 2023.
- We do not anticipate any shelf-life extensions of J&J/Janssen vaccine by FDA and there are no plans for the US government to purchase anymore J&J vaccine.
- Please use the manufacturer's online tool to check expiry dates: https://vaxcheck.jnj/
MCKESSON TAGALERT TEMPERATURE MONITOR
- CDC recently discovered there is some confusion regarding the temperature monitoring device included in the McKesson frozen shippers for Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.
- The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine shippers contain a temperature monitoring device from TagAlert. TagAlert is a type of one-time-use electronic temperature monitoring device (TMD), but it is not a digital data logger (DDL). McKesson shipments do not come with a DDL. This device is meant to be a one-time-use item and was never intended to be returned to McKesson. After performing the TagAlert instructions for confirming the proper shipping temperatures (pictured), the electronic device should be discarded. There is no need to return these one-time-use items to McKesson.
- There has been no change to the process for returning DDLs sent in shipments from Pfizer. Controlant DDLs should still be returned in the packing provided in the Pfizer shippers.
PFIZER TEMPERATURE PROBES AND RETURN LABELS
-
Temperature Probes
- Pfizer is currently conducting a study that involves varying the placement of the temperature-monitoring probe in their single-use thermal shipping container. Flyers are included in Pfizer shipments to explain the temperature probe placement. The device still needs to be returned to Pfizer.
-
Return Labels
- Pfizer had an issue at their shipping site where return labels were not sent out with certain shippers. While Pfizer fixed this issue, Controlant emailed impacted sites to ask that they request a new return label. If you did not receive a return label with your Pfizer shipper, please email call-center@controlant.com or call 701-540-4039. Note, it may take up to three business days for the new return label to arrive.
MONOVALENT EUA/BLA PRODUCTS
- Pfizer: In late February, the EUA-labeled Pfizer adult (12+) monovalent vaccine (NDC 59267-1025-04) is expected to no longer be available due to depleting inventory. When this happens, providers should prepare to only order the BLA-labeled (COMIRNATY) product (NDC 00069-2025-10) to ensure continued availability of Pfizer adult monovalent vaccine.
- Moderna: Due to expiry, Moderna’s BLA-labeled (SPIKEVAX) product is no longer available for ordering. Moderna’s monovalent EUA-labeled products are still available.
- Reminder: BLA-labeled vaccines are interchangeable with their EUA-labeled counterparts.
TENTATIVE MONOVALENT EXPIRATION DATES
- Monovalent COVID-19 vaccine supply is limited, and expiration dates are approaching. Please use the table below as a rough guide for planning purposes.

- Pfizer has already received shelf-life extensions of all monovalent products.
- Moderna is not pursuing any additional shelf-life extensions of their monovalent products. Moderna 10 and Moderna 5 shipping in the upcoming weeks will be short-dated – please plan accordingly.
- Novavax doses expiring on 2/28/23 will not receive shelf-life extensions.
- J&J/Janssen doses will not be receiving any additional shelf-life extensions.

Remember, to check product expiration dates, the best practice is to use the manufacturer’s online expiry checking tools:
