January - Social Determinants of Health Month
Governor Whitmer proclaimed January as “Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Month.”
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) SDOH Month, will serve as a time to recognize the importance of addressing social and economic factors like housing, food, and transportation, to improve health.
Throughout the month, MDHHS will host a series of events and highlight efforts happening around the state, commencing in a virtual SDOH Summit on January 24-26.

Summary The conditions and circumstances of peoples' lives, also known as the social determinants of health (SDOH), are known to greatly influence health outcomes. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), along with many other private and public partners across the state and nationally, continue to develop and implement initiatives to improve social and health outcomes. The 2022-2024 MDHHS Social Determinants of Health Strategy, Michigan’s Roadmap to Healthy Communities, takes a focused approach to align efforts at the state and local level for a greater impact in communities.
The strategy was developed through a collaborative process of engagement with social determinants of health stakeholders throughout MDHHS, state agency partners, and local community partners, as well as an assessment of current SDOH efforts. Three focus areas establish the foundation for the 2022 Overarching Social Determinants of Health Strategy: health equity, housing stability, and food security. MDHHS will continue to administer and support SDOH efforts in all domains; however, a focused effort on health equity, housing stability, and food security will allow Michigan to align efforts at the state, local, and community level for a greater impact as well as allow for more in-depth policy and program review.

Vaccination Coverage by Age 24 Months Among Children Born During 2018–2019 — National Immunization Survey–Child, United States, 2019–2021
What is already known about this topic?
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends routine vaccination against 14 diseases during the first 24 months of life.
What is added by this report?
Vaccination coverage among young children has remained high and stable for most vaccines, although disparities persist. The National Immunization Survey–Child identified no decline overall in routine vaccination coverage associated with the COVID-19 pandemic among children born during 2018–2019, although declines were observed among children living below the federal poverty level and in rural areas.
What are the implications for public health practice?
Additional efforts, such as providers reviewing children’s immunization histories during every clinical encounter, recommending needed vaccinations, and addressing parental hesitancy, are warranted to reduce disparities so that all children can be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

How systematic listening and community feedback can help us better respond to COVID-19
Misinformation and false beliefs can adversely impact the ability to get important and accurate facts out to communities. The World Health Organization offers a free online and self-paced training for anyone interested in "social listening" and community feedback efforts at the regional level. While the course is designed with COVID-19 in mind, the information provides valuable insight into understating what communities "hear" during any Public Health Emergency.
