Remember final FSRs for BP3 are due in EGrAMS no later than August 15, 2022. If you have any questions or issues, contact Janis Tipton.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a 24/7 toll-free nationwide hotline, made up of a network of independently operated and funded local call centers (200+) across the country.
As of July 16, 2022, 988 is the new three-digit dialing code connecting people to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL), where compassionate care and accessible support is available for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress—whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
Moving to 988 does not mean the 1-800-273-8255 number goes away. After July 16, 2022, using either number will get people to the same services. In the end, 988 is an easier-to-remember way to access a strengthened and expanded network of crisis call centers. 988 is not intended only for suicide-related crises. The Lifeline responds 24/7 to calls, chats, or texts from anyone who needs support for suicidal, mental health, and/or substance use crisis, and connects those in need with trained crisis counselors.
Michigan’s 988 Implementation
The Michigan Crisis and Access Line (MiCAL) is Michigan’s statewide crisis and access line. The MiCAL staff answer Michigan’s 988 calls. It does have its own number because it predates 988, but Michiganders can call either number to get help. The Michigan Legislature gave Michigan an advantage by codifying and funding the Michigan Crisis and Access Line back in 2020. In doing so, the Michigan Legislature gave Michigan a head start in developing a comprehensive statewide call center.
Public awareness activities and marketing are set to begin in early 2023. The current focus and priority at MDHHS is to develop and strengthen infrastructure to increase Michigan’s capacity to meet needs and requirements. Once solidified, MDHHS will focus efforts on marketing and advertising the 988-dialing code throughout Michigan.
MDHHS has a resource available to LHDs who need to consult on infection prevention and control issues raised by healthcare facilities: the MDHHS Infection Prevention Resource and Assessment Team (IPRAT). The IPRAT team is made up of subject matter experts from the Communicable Disease Division at MDHHS. The IPRAT team offers both remote and onsite assistance, educational resources, and consultation services. There is no charge for IPRAT services. IPRAT can reached at mdhhs-iprat@michigan.gov.
The next monthly PHEP Partners conference call will be on August 11, 2022, at 1:30 pm. The draft agenda is attached.
