Good Evening Immunization Partners,
The Division of Immunization Team was just on a CDC call and received updated guidance regarding the Expiration Extension for Pfizer vaccine. Based on guidance we received, the expiration extension will also apply to doses prior to August 2021. At this time please do not dispose of any Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. CDC will be sending out the clarifying language soon, along with an updated Expiry Chart. We will be sharing that guidance as soon as we receive it.
We also received noticed that the Beyond Use Date (BUD) for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be honored. This means that all Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine stored at ultra-cold temperatures with an August expiration date, even if the vaccine was removed from ultra-cold storage before August 23rd (date of the memo) will be able to maintain the BUD. So for example:
- Vaccine with expiration date 8/31/2021 and stored at ultracold temperatures.
- New expiration date is 11/30/2021 (3-month extension and November only has 30 days)
- Removed from ultracold storage on 8/9/2021 to refrigerated storage. Vaccine maybe stored between 2⁰C and 8⁰C (36⁰F and 46⁰F) for up to 1 month (31 days).
- Applying the 31-day BUD, the vaccine may be used through 9/8 (past the original expiration date but well before the new expiration date).
Again, this is a recent update to the information on Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine expiration extension. CDC will be providing additional guidance to clarify very soon. We will share that guidance as soon as we receive it. In the mean time it is important that we hold onto any Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and do not discard it until we see the guidance from CDC.
We understand that some of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine may have already been discarded based on the original guidance received on Monday from the CDC.
We apologize for any inconvenience this has created. Please stay tuned for additional guidance arriving soon.
Thank you

Hello Immunization Partners,
We have an important update to share with you from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an amendment to the EUA for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, extending the expiration dates of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine from six to nine months.
Cartons and vials of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine may remain in use for 3 months beyond the printed date, as long as authorized storage conditions between -90°C to -60°C (-130°F to -76°F) have been maintained. Please note: the ultra-cold temperature range has been broadened to include -90°C (-130°F).
Frozen vials stored at -25°C to -15°C and refrigerated vials (2°C to 8°C) are not eligible for extension.
Updated expiry dates for vaccine maintained in ultra-cold storage are shown below.

The extended expiration date is effective immediately.
No changes have been made to the vaccine itself to enable extension of expiry dating. This change is based on stability data generated on batches manufactured over approximately the past nine months of COVID-19 vaccine development, from the batches that supplied early clinical trials through the commercial scale batches currently in production.
Currently available vaccine will not have an updated NDC. Please refer to the current EUA Fact Sheet for Health Care Providers Administering Vaccine for information.

Education Point to Remember:
Preventing Expired Vaccine: Monitor expiration dates weekly, rotate stock as needed and always place soonest-to-expire vaccine up front in your storage unit. Utilize a “first in, first out” approach for vaccine management. CDC has an Expiration Date Tracking Tool for COVID-19 vaccines. In your MCIR Outbreak Inventory, soon-to-expire vaccines will be color-coded for easy identification as follows:
- Red = Expired
- Purple = Expires within 0 to 3 months
- Green = Expires within 3 to 6 months
If vaccine is nearing expiration and your site may not use all doses prior to expiration, please exhaust efforts to reduce wastage: utilize patient recall efforts, expand outreach and vaccination appointments, and coordinate with the Local Health Department to discuss if redistribution is feasible.
