Protect Michigan Commission Weekly Newsletter
April 27, 2021
This week we’re featuring the work of the Protect Michigan Commission’s Senior Workgroup that has actively been trying make sure the COVID-19 vaccine is accessible to senior citizens across Michigan and reaching seniors who do not have access to online resources. So far 64.9% of Michiganders ages 65 and up are fully vaccinated with 73.1% receiving their first dose.
The Workgroup suggested and provided input for a vaccine post card which will be sent to older adults across the state through Area Agencies on Aging and Councils on Aging. More than 15,000 postcards will be sent to various locations across the state for distribution this week.
The workgroup has partnered with the AARP to reach Michigan seniors. Workgroup members talked about the importance of the vaccine to each of them and their communities on the TV program “Real Possibilities” and have recorded PSAs. The workgroup is working with AARP on its HubDialer COVID-19 vaccine outreach program. Through the program, volunteers are calling older adults in areas with high case rates and low vaccination numbers.
Materials presented at the April 23 PMC meeting with the chairs, appointees and stakeholders are available on our website, including:
It's been one year since the creation of Michigan’s Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities. The task force was created per Executive Order 2020-55, and acts in an advisory capacity to Governor Whitmer. It studies the causes of racial disparities and recommends actions to address the historical and systemic inequities.
As a result of that first year, Lt. Gov. Gilchrist is reinforcing the fact that building trust is key to reducing vaccine hesitancy.
