Hello Immunization Partners,
As clinics are expanding and we are working on getting vaccine into arms, we wanted to share a few reminders and updates for your clinic preparation. In light of questions that we have received and errors that have been made, we wanted to reshare some key resources that will assist in answering your questions and preventing mistakes.
One of the most important steps in the immunization process is to screen before administering any immunization. We have immunization screening checklists that we use when we vaccinate routinely, however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed a Pre-Vaccination Checklist that is specific to COVID-19 vaccination. The Prevaccination Checklist for COVID-19 Vaccines should be used to help determine if there is any reason one should not receive the COVID-19 vaccine that day. (Full URL: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/downloads/pre-vaccination-screening-form.pdf). The Spanish version is attached and should be posted soon at: Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine Information | CDC and Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Information | CDC.
The Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines was recently updated and was sent out in an email previously. Here is what was clarified/updated:
- Clarification on the 4-day grace period for administration of the second dose of vaccine
- Updated recommendations regarding vaccine coadministration (highlighting this because we have had questions regarding this)
- Vaccine series should routinely be administered alone without other vaccines
- Minimum interval of 14 days before or after administration with any other vaccine, however, mRNA COVID-19 and other vaccines may be administered within a shorter period in situations where the benefits of vaccination are deemed to outweigh the potential unknown risks of vaccine coadministration (e.g., tetanus toxoid-containing vaccination as part of wound management)
- If mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are administered within 14 days of another vaccine, doses do not need to be repeated for either vaccine
- Clarification on passive antibody therapy and vaccine administration
- Updated information on the management of anaphylaxis

Additional information to help prepare for a COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic:
- CDC has developed training modules for each specific vaccine which can be found at the following CDC website (Full URL: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/info-by-product/index.html). There you will see individual links for each specific vaccine. To access vaccine specific trainings directly, please click on the following links:
- Clinic resources for Planning Vaccination Clinics Held at Satellite, Temporary or Off-Site Locations:
- CDC Vaccine Administration (Full URL: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/admin/resource-library.html)
- Items to have at the clinic to help alleviate errors. May be beneficial to have handouts at each vaccine administration station:
- Vaccine Administration: IM Injection Children 7 through 18 years of age
- Vaccine Administration: IM Injection Adults 19 years of age and older
- Pfizer-BioNTech Mixing Diluent and Vaccine
- Pfizer-BioNTech Prep and Admin
- Modera COVID-19 Vaccine
- When administering a COVID-19 vaccine, please be sure to complete the following:
- Provide an EUA fact sheet to each vaccine recipient/parent/legal guardian prior to vaccine administration
- Providers must provide a COVID-19 vaccination record card to each vaccine recipient/parent/legal guardian. These will be included in ancillary kits shipped to provider offices. Complete these cards accurately, including second dose appointment date, and give to each patient
- Vaccination Record Card PDF (if extra is needed beyond that supplied in the ancillary kits)
- Provide a v-safe information sheet to patients at the time of vaccination and encourage them to enroll and fill out the surveys when prompted to do so
- A v-safe poster is available to promote the program
- Report any adverse event or administration error to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS)
- Ensure that the dose given is reported to the Michigan Care Improvement Registry within 24 hours
- Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) has created a COVID-19 website which has a wealth of information (Full URL: https://www.immunize.org/covid-19/#prod)

- Ask the Experts:
Again, the information above is our current guidance and as more details are shared and/or updated, we will be sure to let you know.
Thank you for all your hard work to protect Michiganders from vaccine-preventable diseases!
