National Preparedness Month is Almost Here. Michigan Prepares Asks, “Do You Have a Plan?”

As September approaches, it’s time to start thinking about National Preparedness Month. This year’s theme, “Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today” encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to focus on creating emergency plans to help them prepare for and recover from an emergency or a disaster. To start planning, visit the Michigan Prepares website www.michigan.gov/prepares and click on the “Preparedness Month” column.

MRC Volunteer Support is Available for Seasonal Vaccinations

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national network of volunteers, organized locally to improve the health and safety of their communities. MRC volunteers include medical and public health professionals, as well as other community members without healthcare backgrounds. MRC units engage these volunteers to strengthen public health, improve emergency response capabilities, and build community resiliency. They frequently contribute to community health activities that promote healthy habits.

BETP Welcomes New EPC in Detroit

The Bureau of EMS, Trauma and Preparedness (BETP) welcomes Scott Browne as the new emergency preparedness coordinator (EPC) for the City of Detroit. Scott brings with him many years of experience as a registered sanitarian and a registered environmental health specialist. Additionally, he’s a Coast Guard veteran and a licensed professional investigator. Welcome, Scott!

BETP Welcomes New EPC in Western U.P.

The Bureau of EMS, Trauma and Preparedness (BETP) welcomes Stephanie Bliss as the new emergency preparedness coordinator (EPC) for the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department. Stephanie brings with her years of experience in epidemiology and in managing state and national health programs. Welcome, Stephanie!

Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning Materials

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) is promoting a summer-long traffic safety campaign called, Michigan Summer of Safety. With the arrival of warmer weather, traffic increases resulting in more traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths. Michigan Summer of Safety is a reminder to all Michiganders to “take safety along for the ride” by driving and boating sober, wearing helmets and reflective gear when biking and riding motorcycles, and always wearing a seat belt.

Research

Variation in Health Care Worker Removal of Personal Protective Equipment

Researchers in the American Journal of Infection Control evaluate healthcare worker personal protective equipment (PPE) removal with the goal of identifying procedural variation. Thirty healthcare workers were observed in October 2014 and that data was compared with the PPE removal guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). The research reflected that only 13% of the healthcare workers observed fully followed the CDC guidelines.  Forty-three percent removed their PPE in the correct order, however only 17% removed the PPE in the correct order and disposed of it correctly. The researchers suggest more training is needed.
