Heavy Rain Forecasted
Southeast Michigan, including Detroit, is under a flood watch beginning this evening at 11p due to forecasted rain from Tropical Depression Beryl. Rain will begin this afternoon. Several forecasts expect at least one inch of rain over the next 24 hours, possibly more.
The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) and the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) are monitoring the weather. The local and regional sewer systems are currently functioning as designed in dry conditions. We urge all customers to:
-
Reduce water usage during the rain event to provide more capacity in the sewer system; and
-
Take safety precautions by not driving or walking into standing water.
In preparation for potential widespread flooding:
- GLWA is staffing the Conner, Freud and Bluehill pump stations over the next few days, and sufficient staffing for the 9 CSO wet weather facilities and the Water Resource Recovery Facility wastewater treatment plant;
- GLWA is monitoring the sewer system capacity from its control center;
- DWSD is monitoring the historically flood-prone areas including viaducts;
- DWSD has reassigned staff and is placing them on 12-hour shifts for flood response, including 7 Vactor crews and 3 pump crews; and
- Wayne County is responsible for county roadways, and MDOT is responsible for freeway and highway storm management.
Avoid flooded streets and do not enter basements with water that cover electrical connections. Report street flooding and basement backups using the Improve Detroit app (guidance below) or by calling 313-267-8000.
