Deputy Mayor Todd Bettison joins Viola Liuzzo Park Association President Artis Johnson, Elaine Steele, co-founder of Raymond & Rosa Parks Institute, and family members to unveil the new monument.
The Viola Liuzzo Park Association celebrated the unveiling of its newest civil rights memorial monument with Deputy Mayor Todd Bettison, City Officials, and community supporters. The memorial was installed at Viola Liuzzo Playground, a Greenfield neighborhood park on Detroit's West side, to honor those who inspired Dr. Viola Liuzzo to journey from Detroit to Selma in 1965, including Mrs. Sarah Evans.
In collaboration with the City of Detroit, the Viola Liuzzo Park Association fundraised $22,000 to create a 7-foot, granite, laser etched, two-sided monument, which includes Michiganders who responded to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's call to come to Selma, as well as those who lost their lives advocating for voting rights and those who continue the fight.
Detroit Historian Jamon Jordan talks with Dorothy Dewberry Aldridge, Civil Rights activist who, for decades, envisioned the beautiful monument unveiled this week.
The newest monument at the Viola Liuzzo Playground is a testament to their legacy of respecting and loving one another as human beings. While also honoring those who fought for the right to vote and those who continue to fight for what's right.

City allocates $1.8M of ARPA funds to support the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History
The City of Detroit is using nearly $2 million of its American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to support major renovations at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, investing in the rich history and culture that help put Detroit on the map, Mayor Mike Duggan announced this week.
The $1.8 million will go towards a $5 million redesign of the museum’s General Motors Theater that will feature state-of-the-art technology and expand capacity for theatre, spoken-word, film, and performances including dance. There are plans for a newly designed stage that brings the audience closer to the stage for a more intimate setting, often desired by artists, presenters, and speakers.
The largest museum of its kind in the world dedicated to African American history when it opened in 1997, the Wright still had much of its original and aging systems and equipment prior to the renovation project which is expected to be completed in early Spring of 2024.

Mayor, Detroit Pistons & residents celebrate completion of 60th refurbished basketball court
City and Pistons officials join students from Cornerstone Jefferson-Douglass Academy to cut the ribbon to celebrate completion of 60th neighborhood basketball court.
City and Pistons officials and the community celebrated last week as the last of 60 neighborhood park basketball courts refurbished or rebuilt by the Detroit Pistons was completed. The celebration took place at Howarth Park on Detroit's east side. The project was in partnership with the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation and was completed over six years.
The Pistons' $2.5-million investment came as a result of a community benefits process with the Pistons and residents as the organization was planning to build its new Pistons Performance Center. Those conversations revealed that Detroiters wanted to see improved basketball courts in their neighborhood parks.
The 60 completed basketball courts are spread across 44 City parks and all City Council districts. Each court was repainted with proper basketball court markings and beautified to increase the aesthetic value of each park.
