The Gratiot/7 Mile (G7) neighborhood planning process concluded in Summer 2021. Our newsletters are now dedicated to sharing periodic updates on our progress implementing the final recommendations. To view the final recommendations, click here.
Last fall and winter, GSD conducted surveys, presented at neighborhood events, and hosted virtual & in-person workshops to gather input on park design. Many thanks to all who contributed to this process! The park concept has been finalized and will include upgrades to existing amenities (e.g. sport courts, walking paths, parking lots), and add new features such as an entry plaza, trees & rain gardens, bike racks, fitness stations, and picnic shelters. The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the City of Detroit $24.8 million to implement safety improvements on high-injury networks. The grant will support the redesign of city streets to focus on pedestrian safety and encourage safer speeds. G7 streets selected to receive improvements include city-managed portions of Hayes Street, 7 Mile Road, and Chalmers Street. Click here to learn more about the grant.
During the G7 planning process, demolishing vacant structures ranked highest among implementation priorities. To date*, the City has demolished 511 public-owned vacant structures in the G7 area through Prop N. Here’s how that number breaks down, by neighborhood:
Franklin: 124 · Mapleridge: 307 · Mohican Regent: 0 · Regent Park: 80
Current and future demolitions can be tracked online here.

We are excited to announce the G7 Façade Improvement Program, launching Spring 2023. The G7 Façade Improvement Grant is made possible by the City of Detroit, Invest Detroit, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, and Fifth Third Bank through the Strategic Neighborhood Fund.
The purpose of the program is to help make G7 microdistricts more inviting, vibrant, and walkable by improving the physical conditions of businesses located along designated commercial corridors. This program will allow eligible businesses that are selected to obtain a grant of up to $35,000 for storefront upgrades. Applicant must operate an active, non-chain business in a standalone location within three designated microdistricts (Gratiot/Liberal, Gratiot/McNichols, or Houston-Whittier/Kelly) to receive design & construction services for exterior improvements.
The grant will be administered by the DEGC. Detroit Community Solutions, Osborn Neighborhood Alliance, and Redeem Detroit will be assisting with community engagement and outreach.
The application will open on Monday, April 24, 2023 and grants will be awarded to eligible businesses on a first come, first served basis. Click here to apply or use your mobile device to scan the QR code above.
