Officials from the City of Detroit and United Community Housing Coalition outlined efforts to help Detroiters avoid eviction with $5 million in funds through the federal CARES Act.
The eviction effort is part of a plan to spend $31 million in federal funds provided to address the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan from the City’s Housing & Revitalization Department, which was announced earlier this month, will focus on supporting homeowners and renters with housing challenges; homeless prevention; and providing housing and services to homeless individuals.
For residents facing an eviction with a judgment or a complaint and summons, assistance is available through the United Community Housing Coalition. The funds will help residents pay off or challenge a judgment or relocate in some cases.

Famed artist Hubert Massey to design Woodward art mural - Power to the People - with support from local student artists
Students work on the Power to the People mural on Woodward with renowned artist Hubert Massey.
Hubert Massey is leading 20 Detroit teens in a bold street project to leave a message of resilience and power on Woodward Avenue. Massey was chosen by the students based on his experience, work in the community, work with youth and the sketch of his vision included in his application.
Massey's art is everywhere - in Mexicantown, Greektown, the Cultural Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Athletic Club and the TCF Center.
Mayor Mike Duggan revealed the inspirational message, “POWER TO THE PEOPLE”, being painted along a block-long span of Woodward Avenue leading to Spirit Plaza during his June 17 news briefing.
The students working with Massey are from Detroit Heals Detroit and the Detroit Public Schools Community District.
The mural will be unveiled during the Juneteenth Freedom Rally at Spirit Plaza June 19 at 10 a.m., capping off a week-long celebration of solidarity and reflection across the city.
The street mural project was made possible by the Knight Foundation, Bedrock, Eastern Market and Motor City Paint.
