COVID Update City Working for Residents

COVID Free PPE for Small Businesses

Beginning May 25, Detroit small businesses with 50 employees or less can get a free PPE starter kit with 100 masks, 200 gloves and a gallon of hand sanitizer for their employees and customers.  The kits were donated by the DTE Energy Foundation.

To sign up for the PPE starter kit, owners should go to detroitmeanbusiness.org, complete the form and schedule a pickup time at a designated Detroit location.  The free resources are available while supplies last and will help businesses safely reopen.

On the Web site, business owners will find: reopening guidelines developed by the Detroit Health Department; sources to obtain additional PPE; Webinars on how to operate a business safely; and financial and technical resources for businesses in the COVID-19 era.

Businesses that plan to open May 26 need to complete the form to pick up PPE on May 25.

COVID Free PPE for Small Businesses

Mayor Mike Duggan outlined the steps that businesses need to follow as they reopen May 26. Under Governor Gretchen Whitmer's recent order, certain retail businesses may open this Tuesday. The Mayor said the order does not include places of public accommodation, such as restaurants, gyms, theaters, hair and nail salons, spas, etc.

According to Mayor Duggan, business owners that plan to open May 26 will need to:

  • Provide necessary PPE to employees
  • Post signs requiring face coverings for customers
  • Follow store occupancy restrictions
  • Enforce social distancing of six feet inside and outside the business
  • Install physical barriers at checkout to protect employees and customers
  • See customers by appointment

The Mayor also reminded business owners that the City’s Neighborhood Police Officers (NPO) are available to assist as they reopen. See the list of NPOs at www.detroitmi.gov/police.
