City to Expand COVID-19 Testing to Essential Workers

Mayor Mike Duggan announced today that testing will begin April 20 for employees at businesses providing essential services, such as grocery stores, gas stations and pharmacies. The testing at the State Fairgrounds also will be available to City of Detroit employees providing essential services and restaurant workers.

With the announcement, Mayor Duggan hopes Detroit becomes the first city in the country to have testing in place for all employees of essential businesses.

Starting Monday, business owners providing essential services can call (313) 230-0505, register their company and receive an access code. After the City determines if the business is providing an essential service, the owner will receive a follow-up call and verification that the access code is valid. The code will allow business owners or employees to make testing appointments. These employees will not need a doctor’s prescription for the test.

Several Detroit Grocery Stores Offer Senior Shopping Hours

Detroit seniors can now shop at a number of Detroit grocery stories during special hours, thanks in part to the efforts of City Councilmember Scott Benson and several City agencies -- the Department of Neighborhoods, Health Department and Office of Contracting and Procurement.

The stores, mostly on Detroit’s east side in District 3, have designated senior-only shopping hours to support and protect senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. The list of participating stores includes seven eastside locations and four westside locations including Meijer.

The following stores have committed to supporting senior only shopping hours during the hours and days listed below. Please contact the stores directly if you have any questions.

City Offers Detroiters Needing COVID-19 Testing Access to Doctors and $2 Rides

The City has a plan to make sure Detroiters with COVID-19 symptoms get access to testing even if they don’t have a primary care physician, health insurance, or a car.

Detroit physician offices are now accepting new patients for Detroiters without insurance or a primary care physician. Once a person has a doctor’s prescription and appointment time, they can get a ride for $2 to the State Fairgrounds in a safe, sanitary vehicle through IntelliRide.

The free testing will continue at the Fairgrounds through early May, with more than 700 tests being administered daily.
