Congratulations to Mr. Moore, School Cultural Facilitator at Burton International Academy, for winning a Spirit of Detroit Award for helping start a student council and mentorship program at his school! Students were able to attend Formal Session on February 5th to watch him receive his award.


What's going on Downtown?

 Council Approvals

  • Council member Castañeda-López and Council President Pro Tem Mary Sheffield are co-sponsoring Residential Parking Permit legislation to help reduce the burdens faced by residents who live near high-traffic areas. The program will help protect neighborhoods from nonresidential parkers, which will allow residents greater access to parking near their homes and decreases the vehicle congestion, noise, and pollution caused by nonresident vehicles. The public hearing for this legislation will be held in the Public Health and Safety Committee (Date TBD).
  • The City of Detroit Health Department has been awarded $40,000 through the Opioid Academic Detailing Program. This funding will be used to train professionals who prescribe opioids.
  • Emergency demolitions in D6: 6313, 6314, and 6315 30th St.
  • Resolution to encourage an ongoing cooperative relationship between the United States and Cuba. 

 Other Updates

  • Representatives from Marathon, the Department of Homeland Security, Detroit Health Department, and others spoke before City Council on February 5th regarding the odors expelled from Marathon Oil Refinery the weekend of February 2nd. There will be follow-up discussion at Council with the relevant parties mid-April. 
  • Visit this website to obtain information and submit a comment regarding Marathon's request for a variance from certain provisions from the Bulk Solid Material Ordinance. The Great Lakes Environmental Law Center has also summarized information regarding this request and compiled relevant documents on their websiteComments accepted until Feb. 25.
  • The City of Detroit has extended the deadline for individuals to challenge their 2019 property assessments until February 23rd.  For assistance on challenging assessments, email assessorreview@detroitmi.gov. The City also provides assistance to low-income households through the Homeowners Property Tax Assistance Program. For more information, call the Office of the Assessor at 313-224-3035. 
  • Our office is partnering with with State Senator Stephanie Chang to save and restore Fort Wayne as a National Park. With the construction of the Gordie Howe Bridge we have the opportunity to create an urban national park in the City for local residents and visitors from around the world.Please consider signing this petition to help improve a neglected part of Detroit’s Riverfront and history!

If you wish to attend, please RSVP in advance to allow swift entrance into the meeting.

The Immigration Task Force held its first meeting of the year at the The Islamic Center of Detroit on February 6th! Members enjoyed a delicious meal together and strategized about their goals for the upcoming year. As a reminder, meetings are open to the public participation is limited to task force members only. Gordie Howe International Bridge Updates

  • The Southwest Detroit Community Office is now open!

  • Cast your vote on design options for pedestrian bridges that will be installed over I-75 as part of the Gordie Howe Bridge. Vote for your favorite design here!
  • In anticipation of construction at the US Port of Entry, several roads will be permanently closed in early 2019. Closures will occur on the cross streets between South Street and Jefferson Avenue, including Schroeder Street, Waterman Street, Rademacher Street, Reid Street, Crawford Street and Livernois Avenue.
