What's happening Downtown?

Key City Council approvals:

  • Detroit Public Library: funding for a new and improved Bookmobile to take literacy on the road!
  • Two tax abatements for affordable housing developments: Clay Apartments (42 units at or below 60% AMI) on the site of the former DPD 7th Precinct and Himelhoch Condos (36 units at 60% AMI for seniors)
  • $1.1 million to the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation to support their work, including business development, retention and promoting business and investment in Detroit
  • Contract increase of $76k ($150+ overall) to Covenant House to provide emergency youth homeless services 
  • Demolitions: 6022 Epworth (48210), 1085 Waterman (48209), and 6207 Toledo (48209)
  • A resolution in support of Michigan House Bill 6227, which would give people the opportunity to have non-violent marijuana-related convictions expunged. 

FYIs:

  • Two proposed business development projects in District 6 will be heard before the Board of Zoning Appeals on July 24 at 9:15am: 1565 Lafayette and 7900 Dix. Learn more here
  • Next week, City Council will vote on an ordinance to regulate the sale, storage and growing of medical marijuana at the Planning and Economic Development Committee. If you have public comment, plan to arrive on July 26th at 10am - 2 Woodward Ave, 13th Floor. Learn more about the ordinance here
