New Funding announced in blight removal efforts

Detroit’s demolition program received another huge boost when the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) announced Wednesday that it has authorized $88 million in new blight removal funding. This is the largest single financial award in the history of the city’s blight removal efforts and a tremendous display of confidence in Detroit’s demolition program.

The U.S. Department of Treasury has so far awarded more than a quarter-billion dollars for Detroit’s blight removal efforts. As of today, the city has taken down 9,156 dangerous and vacant buildings in neighborhoods across the city. This new funding will allow Detroit to add another 6,000 vacant houses to the demolition list.
