M-1 Rail
Penske Tech Center Grand Opening
Mayor Duggan joined Councilwoman Mary Sheffield,
Congresswoman Dingell and members of the business community on Tuesday to
officially open the M-1 Rail Penske Tech Center. The Penske Tech Center will be the headquarters of the M-1 Rail
technology systems, rail cars and operations team, and is located between
Bethune and Custer streets on Woodward. The 19,000-square-foot technical center
facility will sit at the northern end of the 3.3-mile rail loop.
Since 2011, M-1 RAIL has helped generate $1.3 billion in
construction-related economic development along the Woodward Corridor and
surrounding neighborhoods. Known as the QLINE, the service will be part of an
improving transit system in Detroit, connecting with DDOT, SMART, the People
Mover and Amtrak to give Detroiters easy access to their work and play, as well
as hospitals, shopping and education institutions.
Purple Heart Truck
Run stops in Detroit
Mayor Duggan and City Council members honored
wounded veterans Thursday by welcoming the Purple Heart Run Truck to Detroit as
part of its national awareness tour. The Run is a road trip across America
where Purple Heart recipients thank Americans from across the country for their
appreciation and support of our nation’s military veterans and their families.
Driven by Cpl. Tyler Huffman, a disabled veteran wounded in combat in
Afghanistan, the customized Purple Heart Ford F-150 will make its way from
coast-to-coast and back, rallying communities to thank our country’s military
veterans and support this great mission. The 2015 Ford F-150 Super Cab truck
has been adapted to suit combat-wounded veterans who are paralyzed or have lost
legs or arms.
The Purple Heart Run began in Mt. Vernon, Va., on May 2, and will cross
the nation before returning to Washington, D.C., on Memorial Day on May 30.

Youth Soccer League kicks off
Detroit’s citywide elementary school soccer league kicked off its third
season on April 30 with nearly 1,000 young soccer enthusiasts set to take the
field. In its first two years, the league had averaged about 600 players.
Mayor Mike Duggan, Detroit PAL, Detroit Parks and
Recreation Department and Detroit schools launched the “Goal Detroit”
elementary soccer league during the fall of 2014 with a goal of introducing the
game to more young Detroiters, regardless of whether they attend a public,
charter or private school.
This spring, the collaboration has expanded to
serve eight more schools and now serves 66 teams from 31 elementary schools.
Matches are played at the following locations:
- O’Hair Park, 20000 Evergreen Rd, behind Henry Ford High School
(northwest Detroit)
- Patton Park, 2301 Woodmere St., (southwest Detroit)
- Farwell Park, 2711 E. Outer Drive (northeast Detroit)
Mayor Duggan participates in WSU
Center for School Health in the College of Education
Mayor Duggan joined Wayne State University to host 500 schoolchildren
to promote prevention of childhood obesity and the importance of regular
exercise. An estimated 500 metro Detroit third- and fifth-graders came to
Matthaei Physical Education Center to participate in an event promoting the
prevention of childhood obesity and the importance of regular exercise.
The annual event, called “All Children Exercising Simultaneously”
(ACES) day, draws thousands of elementary school students to sites around the
world for exercise and promotion of physical activity in schools. PACES Day
teaches families an important message: A family that exercises together, spends
quality time together while leading a healthy lifestyle.

1,300 tons of debris. In 2015, the Detroit Department of Public Works crews
removed 31,800 tons of illegal dumping from 44,641 locations and collected
111,000 tires. During last year’s effort, sponsors donated 88 dumpsters and $35,250 in
cash and $70,000 in in-kind donations and supplies.
Interested individuals must register with the City of
