Mayor Duggan announces city has discovered $50M available for city services

Mayor Mike Duggan presented a balanced budget to Detroit City Council for the third consecutive fiscal year on Thursday and presented information about an additional $50 million in unspent bond funds, which date back to 1987, that he plans to use for city services. The Mayor proposed allocating $11.7 million to improve 40 city parks. His proposal also included using $7.5 million for DPD’s Real Time Crime Center and $7 million to rebuild the eighth precinct. 2016 State of the City Address

Mayor Duggan’s 2016 State of the City Address was presented on Tuesday at Second Ebenezer Church. Mayor Duggan’s speech included an honest assessment of the City’s progress over the past two years and the work that still remains.  The Mayor focused on five key things necessary for the city’s full recovery including crime reduction, blight removal, increasing jobs, reducing car insurance rates, and improving the quality of schools. City launches new Open Data portal for demolition project

This week the city of Detroit launched a new section of its Open Data Portal that provides information on each of the more than 7,700 residential and commercial building demolitions it has conducted since January 2014.  The new site includes the date of the demolition, the price, and the contractor that performed the work.  Visitors to the site also can map and chart the data to view where all of the demolitions have occurred and various trends in the project.  

DWSD offers payment assistance plan for low-income residents

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, as part of a regional program, will soon offer an innovative payment assistance plan to help low-income residents pay their water bills. The Water Residential Assistance Program launching March 1, will provide qualifying customers at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty threshold, with help in paying current and past-due water bills. WRAP is a Great Lakes Water Authority regional program offered in several counties including Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb. The program will be administered through the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency in Detroit. To apply for the WRAP, residents may call Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency (on or after March 1) at 313.386.WRAP (9727) or visit the website at www.waynemetro.org/wrap.

City of Detroit Office of Homeland Security Certifies 14 New Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) Volunteers

The CERT volunteers were trained to assist first responders in the event of an emergency or disaster. The training included disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, and basic medical treatment.The next class is in May. For more information, please email hsimmons@detroitmi.gov.

Upcoming road closures

The Detroit Department of Public Works today announced the following street closings:

    Westbound lanes on Michigan Ave from Griswold to Shelby will be closed completely from Nov. 10, 2015 through Sep. 2016 for building renovation.  However, one lane in each direction for both eastbound and westbound traffic will be open at all times, using the eastbound lanes.

    State St (south side) from Griswold to Shelby will have a partial lane closure of eastbound lane and sidewalk from Nov. 13, 2015 through May 1, 2016 for building renovation.

    Shelby from State St and alley south of State will have a partial closure of the northbound lane from Nov. 13, 2015 through May 1, 2016 for building renovation.

    Rosa Parks from Porter to Howard and Howard from Rosa Parks to Alley south of 10th St will have the eastbound parking lane closed from Jan. 18, 2016 through Feb. 19, 2016.

    Congress from Woodward to Bates will have northern partial lane and sidewalk closed for building renovation from Feb. 8 through Sep. 30, 2016.

    Congress from Woodward to Bates will have two (2) northern lanes and sidewalk closed for building renovation from Feb. 24 through Mar. 4, 2016 from 6:00pm to 6:00am.

    Woodward from Gratiot to Michigan will be closed for crossover reconstruction from Feb. 16, 2016 through May 21, 2016.

    Jefferson, Larned, E Grand River, Times Square, St. Anne, and Lafayette will have intermittent traffic detours to perform fiber cable work from Jan. 15, 2016 through June 15, 2016 from 5:00pm to 7:00am.

    Mt. Elliott from Evaline to Mound will be closed for bridge reconstruction from Jan. 19, 2016 through Aug. 31, 2016.

    East Jefferson from Beaufeit to Bellevue will be partially closed from Nov. 06, 2015 through May 1st, 2016 for reconstruction of overpass/bridge.  One (1) westbound lane and two (2) eastbound lanes will be open at all times.

    Second Ave. from Bethune Ave. to York will have the parking lane closures to perform fiber work Dec. 21, 2015 – Mar. 11, 2016.
