FY18 Executive Budget Recommendation
Statement from Director C. Heidi Grether

The Governor’s executive budget recommendation for Fiscal Year 2018 puts the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) in a strong position to safeguard our environment and Michigan’s valuable natural resources. The funding will enhance our efforts to support local communities and protect public health with a focus in five key areas:

  • Managing Risks at Contaminated Sites
  • Ensuring Quality Drinking Water
  • Building External Relationships
  • Replacing Declining Fee Revenue
  • Extending Fee Sunsets

Environmental threats, whether from contaminated sites or vapor intrusion or toxic air or poor quality water, can impact our daily lives. Michigan citizens expect staff and resources are in place to protect public health and respond to these threats. The proposed budget aligns the expectations of Michiganders with the work of the MDEQ.

Above all the Governor’s executive budget recommendation protects programs central to our mission while building for the future and is another step toward a healthier, cleaner and stronger Michigan. We look forward to working with the legislature and our stakeholders throughout the budget process.

The MDEQ is dedicated to respect for Michigan’s citizens, stewardship of the environment, and support for a sustainable economy.
