Michigan’s Coastal Program says: Add the Black River to your “to paddle” list!

Coastal Program-funded kayak launch provides public access to coastal water trails

Winter is the perfect time to begin planning an adventure to Michigan’s sparkling coastline.

Those plans are bolstered by projects initiated across the state to increase public access to Michigan’s water wonderland, making it easier for people to do what they love: fish, swim, paddle, and explore.

South Haven Kayak LaunchWith support from Michigan’s Coastal Management Program through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the lakeside community of South Haven now enjoys a paddle sports launch at its Black River Park. Projects like this support growing community interest in paddle sports tourism and water recreation.

The universally accessible public launch provides access to nature on the scenic Black River, located minutes away from the vibrant festivals, concerts, and shopping of downtown South Haven.

With the addition of the launch, users of all mobility levels have access to Lake Michigan and nearby water trails. Handrails, boat rollers and transfer points allow boaters with limited and full mobility to easily get their craft on the water.

“The City of South Haven is thrilled to offer access to the Black River and Lake Michigan to users of all abilities.” said Mayor Robert Burr.

The launch aids in the ongoing development of a local trail corridor, connecting the Kal-Haven Trail, used by hikers and bikers, to the Lake Michigan Water Trail.

Trail corridors benefit communities by increasing recreation and fitness opportunities, improving environmental awareness, and enhancing local economies.
