State-sponsored health plans are now covering at-home COVID-19 tests!

In accordance with federal guidelines, beginning January 15, 2022, state-sponsored health insurance carriers are temporarily covering up to eight at-home over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 diagnostic tests, every 30 days (or calendar month) for state employees and each individual covered under their health insurance. In order to qualify as a covered benefit, each test must be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Plan-specific coverage, reimbursement, and contact information can be found on the COVID-19 Insurance Carrier Coverage Guide, located on the Employee Benefits Division (EBD) website (www.mi.gov/employeebenefits) under Announcements and the Featured Info tab. If you have questions about this coverage, please review your carrier’s information linked within the Guide or contact your carrier directly. If you are covered under the State Health Plan PPO or the State High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), contact or access the link for OptumRx.

This coverage is independent of the federal government’s provision of four free at-home OTC COVID-19 tests per household. Ordering free tests through the federal government’s program does not impact your plan-specific coverage for tests received through your State-sponsored health insurance carrier as outlined in the guide. For more information about the federal government’s program or to order the four free at-home tests, visit www.covidtests.gov.
