Presentation of Art Design Proposed for A2 Bridges

A presentation of the final art design proposed for the Ann Arbor Bridges location, at Stadium Boulevard and State Street, will be offered to the public on:

Monday, April 21st

Beginning at 7pm

Downtown Ann Arbor District Library
Multipurpose Room
343 S. Fifth

The art proposal was designed by artist Catherine Widgery. She is an award winning artist who has created over fifty site-specific artwork in the US and Canada. Her work has been featured on the cover of Sculpture and World Sculpture News magazines.

The proposed art, titled Arbor Winds, features etched glass and layered images of trees. Widgery describes the trees as metaphors for our own paradoxical fragility and strength in the context of our life cycles. Inspired by architectural louvers, the work repeats a design element that uses three panels of glass to create a single image. Within each panel there will appear an afterimage, resulting from the double-sided glass etching, as if the wind has blown the tree. The project will include lighting to allow the artwork to be luminous and visible at night. It is proposed to be placed at the State Street underpass and at two points along Stadium Boulevard’s sidewalk.

Widgery presented the original design at a public meeting on June 7th. Since then, the artist has incorporated feedback from stakeholders into design revisions and those changes will be on view.

The Ann Arbor Public Art Commission selected the Ann Arbor Bridges reconstruction project as a location for public art. A selection panel, with membership that included residents of the neighborhood, reviewed over 35 submissions to the project and selected the four finalists to create a design proposal for artwork at the site.

Work in Progress

Art and Rain Garden spring installation

A new rain garden with an integrated art installation will be planted this spring. Property on the corner of Kingsley and First Street was purchased by the City last year and will be converted into a more functional and inviting landscape in May. Artist Joshua Wiener was commissioned by the City to work with the landscape architect to design and fabricate artwork for the site.

The artwork will be five larger-than-life fish sculptures pointed toward the river. They will be positioned to appear as if swimming along the walking path and through the plants within the rain garden.

Joshua Wiener is a public artist from Colorado and is an accomplished stone sculptor. His Joshua's public sculptures can be found in Florida, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado. Joshua is an instructor at the Art Students League in Denver, CO.

The Ann Arbor Public Art Commission and the City of Ann Arbor selected the rain garden installation project as a location for public art. A selection panel, with membership that included stakeholders from the neighborhood, reviewed over 20 submissions for the project and selected Joshua Wiener to create artwork for the installation.
