New Grants for Maine Libraries

03/20/2011 08:47 PM EDT

Maine libraries have been fortunate over the years to benefit from the generosity of the Tabitha and Stephen King Foundation. At the dedication of the new addition to the Vinalhaven Public Library in 2007, former First Lady and new Maine Library Commission member, Karen Baldacci stated that the Kings had told her that many Maine libraries now had bathrooms as a result of their foundation. That comment drew a chuckle from the large audience, but it was very meaningful to these islanders because their library had operated for over 99 years without one! The beautiful new addition solved that dilemma!

Over the last few weeks libraries have shared with us their delight in learning that their library was a recipient of a grant from the Kings in this latest round of awards. Keep in mind that the list includes only those libraries that shared this information with the Maine State Library.

- Easton Junior/Senior High School $25,000 for automation- Kingman Elementary School $20,000 to setup a library in their school- MSAD # 45 (Washburn) $2,000 for the purchases of Nooks and e-books- Long Creek Youth Development Center (South Portland) $7,000 to purchase books for a revolving book collection for the Department of Corrections Library Coalition- Katahdin region school libraries $25,000 to create 21st century reading hubs within the school libraries by increasing the availability and accessibility of the six Katahdin region schools' library collections and providing 21st century technology- Albert F. Totman Library (Phippsburg) $20,000 building renovations- Vose Library (Union) $50,000 towards the construction of a new library building- Nathan Clifford School (Portland) $5,000 for the nonfiction collection and audiobooks- Hussey Elementary School (Augusta) $4,500 for a summer library program for the district- Maine Historical Society Library (Portland) $35,000 for state-of-the-art microfilm scanners and attendant hardware and millwork modifications
