Governor Mills: Maine Will Not Conform to Recent Federal Tax Relief Provisions
Governor Janet Mills has issued a directive to the State Tax Assessor indicating that, without legislative action, Maine will not adopt several federal tax relief measures included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) as part of the state’s 2025 tax code.
The following provisions from the federal law will not be reflected in Maine’s state tax code:
- Elimination of state taxes on tipped income
- Elimination of state taxes on overtime pay
- Increase in the standard deduction
As a result, these forms of income will remain subject to Maine state taxes, and the state’s standard deduction will not increase to match the federal level.
With the Governor’s directive, any decision to adopt these federal tax provisions at the state level now rests with the Maine Legislature.
Absentee Voting is Underway
As of Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, you can start voting in-person absentee in Maine for the Nov. 4, 2025 election. The final day to request an absentee ballot is Thursday, Oct. 30.
There are two statewide ballot questions this year on the ballot. Both initiatives, one requiring voter photo ID and another establishing risk protection orders to restrict firearms access, met the signature requirement of 67,682 valid signatures. Under Maine’s indirect initiative process, the Legislature had the option to act but took no vote, sending both measures directly to voters.
Ballots must be received no later than 8:00 p.m. EDT on Election Day. Maine citizens who are registered to vote may use the following link to request an absentee ballot:
