Bath Built is Best Built
Bath Iron Works has been awarded a contract to build another Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG-148. Funded through the 2024 and 2025 federal budgets, the project continues a multi-year contract awarded in 2023.
“This award reflects the skill and dedication of BIW’s workforce and reinforces that ‘Bath Built is Best Built,’” said Sen. Susan Collins, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “It strengthens our Navy, supports Maine jobs, and ensures long-term stability at BIW.”
The U.S. Secretary of the Navy announced that the vessel will be called the USS Kyle Carpenter, continuing the Navy’s long-standing tradition of naming destroyers after heroes and leaders who have served with distinction.
While serving in the war in Afghanistan in November 2010, then 21-year-old Carpenter shielded a fellow Marine from a grenade blast, an act that saved his comrade’s life.
Carpenter was severely injured, went into cardiac arrest, and flatlined three times.
In 2014, Carpenter was awarded the Medal of Honor, the country's top award for valor in combat.
He became the youngest living recipient of the award.
The U.S. Senate has approved funding measures that allocate over $250 million for construction projects at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and for the Maine National Guard.
Senator Susan Collins announced that the legislation passed with strong bipartisan support just before the August recess.
Included in the package is nearly $221 million for continued improvements to the shipyard’s dry dock, and approximately $228 million for upgrades to its water and electrical utilities.
An additional $6.5 million is designated for a new security facility at the Kittery shipyard, which will house security personnel, police, NCIS, and fire services. Collins previously noted that the existing fire station dates back to the 1800s and no longer meets operational needs.
The Maine National Guard will also receive $2.5 million to construct a new maintenance and equipment building for the Air National Guard unit in Bangor.
