It’s National Nurses Week!

Nurses Week celebrates the effort, dedication, and sacrifice nurses make every day. Nurses are essential members of America's healthcare workforce providing care through every stage of life, working with patients at their most intimate and vulnerable moments. National Nurses Week occurs from May 6th through the 12th annually. First observed in October of 1954, it wasn't until 1990 that the week-long celebration was officially recognized by the American Nurses Association Board of Directors. Thank a nurse today!
Maine’s Moose Hunt

Maine's moose population is the largest of all the lower 48 states, estimated at 60-70,000 animals. This presents an incredible hunting opportunity for those lucky enough to win a Maine moose permit. And the appeal is no secret — every year, the Maine moose hunt is among the most coveted in the nation, with an average of 50,000 applications for the 2,000 to 3,000 moose permits typically issued.
How to Enter the Moose Lottery
MDIFW no longer accepts paper applications – you must apply online. If you do not have access to a computer or the Internet at home, we would suggest:
- Using a computer at your local library
- Using a computer at work during lunch or a break
- Asking a friend or relative with a computer for help in applying
2024 Moose permit lottery applications will be accepted online only beginning April 1 until May 15, 2024 at 11:59 pm (ET).

It’s Amphibian Week!

We at IF&W are celebrating Amphibian Week, and we can't do that without also celebrating vernal pools!
Over half of Maine’s frogs, toads, salamanders, snakes, and turtles are known to visit vernal pools at some point in their lifecycle. Some amphibians such as blue-spotted salamanders, spotted salamanders, and wood frogs breed almost exclusively in vernal pools.
Unfortunately, the temporary nature of vernal pools also makes them easy to miss, challenging to protect, and vulnerable to manipulation of the landscape by humans. The Natural Resources Protection Act (NRPA) helps protect vernal pools identified as Significant Vernal Pools, and other critical habitats. You can learn more about the NRPA and Significant Wildlife Habitats at the link below:
