Remember the Maine

Remember the Maine Day on February 15

Every February 15, the State of Maine observes “Remember the Maine Day” in remembrance of the American battleship, U.S.S. Maine. The battleship sank in Cuba on February 15, 1898, killing 266 crew members. The explosion led to a Naval Blockade with Cuba and a declaration of war with Spain. According to the Library of Congress, “the Spanish-American War lasted only about ten weeks in 1898. However, the war had far-reaching effects for both the United States and Spain.”

Silver

USS Maine Silver Set on display at the Blaine House

From the Blaine House historical record, “The USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, setting the stage for the Spanish-American War. The silver was recovered from the wreck of the ship, cleaned, and repaired. The Navy sent the tureen and vegetable dishes to the State of Maine, together with a silver loving cup with antler handles, that Mainers living in New Orleans had given to the captain of the USS Maine a few years before the explosion. In the 1990s, the Navy commissioned the nuclear submarine USS Maine (SSBN741A). At that time, the Navy donated this silver set to the people of Maine. The new USS Maine sails with the loving cup with antler handles.”

Embark on a Winter Lighthouse Tour

Maine’s majestic lighthouses are some of the most popular tourist attractions in the summer, and they are certainly wonderful to explore when the warm sun is glittering over the ocean.

However, there’s nothing like seeing these towering beauties against the snow-covered shorelines and icy cold waters. Some of the lighthouses that you may want to see for yourself during the winter include:

  • Cape Neddick Light in York
  • Portland Head Light at Cape Elizabethin Portland
  • Burnt Coat Harbor Island Light on Swan’s Island

In addition to touring the lighthouses and capturing the scenery, you may find walking trails on the grounds of these lighthouses that are accessible during the winter months.
