Tick Management Tips
Via The University of Maine Cooperative Extension: Tick Lab
Although management of tick populations can be a challenge, reducing exposure to ticks is critical in avoiding Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. Unfortunately, there is no single control method that will eliminate tick exposure on its own. An integrated pest management (IPM) approach relies on a combination of practices to prevent or manage pest issues through the most economical and ecologically sound measures. By utilizing the strategies found online here in an integrated approach, exposure to ticks can be reduced.
Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol & Traveling Tips
The Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol, sponsored by GEICO, is a free service that provides assistance to stranded motorists on the Maine Turnpike. The Safety Patrol also clears the Turnpike of debris and other hazards, and provides temporary traffic control at minor accident scenes to help keep Maine Turnpike customers safe and traffic flowing smoothly.
The Safety Patrol offers free, limited roadside assistance to drivers in need, including:
- changing flat tires;
- jump-starting vehicles;
- providing lockout assistance; and
- moving disabled vehicles to the shoulder.
Patrol vehicles are equipped with emergency lighting and road flares to further increase safety for stranded motorists, and also to help relieve congested traffic at the scenes of incidents and accidents. Patrol operators will also assist the Maine State Police and other first responders when needed.
Look for the Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol sponsored by GEICO vehicles during your travels on the Turnpike.
Motorists can learn more about the program and share their feedback and experiences via www.SafetyPatrolinfo.com or on social media using #GEICOSafetyPatrol.

ATV Rules and Regulations for Maine
With thousands of miles of beautiful trails across the state, ATV season is here! The Department of Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (IF&W) reminds riders to please check with local clubs to make sure the trails are open.
Before you go, the first thing you have to do is make sure your ATV is registered. Registration fees fund trail maintenance and building new trails. Fees also support volunteer ATV clubs that provide critical work maintaining the trail systems and private landowners who allow trail access. For every ATV registration purchased, over two-thirds of the fee goes directly into the trail maintenance fund.
Maine residents may renew an ATV registration online. However, new registrations must be done through a registration agent, such as a town office or the Maine IF&W main office in Augusta. All 2021 registrations expire June 30, and 2022 registrations are valid from the date of issue through June 30 of next year.
Oversized ATVs, which are categorized as an ATV that is wider than 65 inches or weighs more than one ton according to the original manufacturer specifications, cannot be registered in Maine except in certain situations.
Registration of an oversized ATV is allowed for Maine residents only who previously registered that oversized ATV before January 1, 2022. An oversized ATV allowed under this law to be registered by its current Maine-resident owner may be transferred to a new (Maine resident) owner, who may also register that ATV.

As always, stay on marked ATV trails that have green and white signs. And remember, not all snowmobile trails are ATV trails.
Wreaths Across America Announces Grand Opening of its Gold Star Family History and Hospitality House in Maine
The renovated house will be a free bed and breakfast, and a history and education museum for visiting Gold Star Families.
National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) is proud to announce the completion and grand opening of its latest education project, the Gold Star Family History and Hospitality House. The historic home, which has been under renovations over the last five years, is located next door to the nonprofit’s national headquarters and museum in Columbia Falls, Maine.
The house has five bedrooms, a parlor, dining room, large living room, eat-in kitchen, sunroom, two and a half bathrooms, and features a handicap-accessible bedroom with a full bath. In keeping with the WAA mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach, each room has been decorated to represent a period in United States history associated with a military conflict. Stepping back in time in this beautiful home, while experiencing the lifestyle of the era and further learning the personal stories of those who served in that time will be a history lesson to remember. A focal point is the five ft. diameter-stained glass window designed and crafted by Tennessee couple Ralph and Cheryl Campbell. The piece features a wreath encircling an eagle flying over balsam trees.
