The Maine State Legislature is entering the final days of session.

Statutory adjournment for the Second Regular Session is April 20, 2022.

Free Tax Preparation

Stop paying to get your taxes prepared.  CA$H Maine volunteers will prepare and file your taxes for free so that you can get 100% of your refund!  Volunteers receive rigorous IRS standards of conduct training and utilize secure and encrypted online software.

Do You Qualify?

In order to qualify for free tax preparation services, you must meet all of the criteria below.

  • Your household’s combined income for the year is $58,000 or less.
  • You did not have any unusual types of income or expenses, such as rental property, farm income, or self-employment with more than $35,000 in expenses.
  • No one in the household lived or worked outside of Maine in 2021.
  • You or your spouse were not active military in 2021.
  • No one in your household is a foreign student, teacher, or trainee in the U.S. on a F, J, M, or Q visa.

In-person Tax Preparation Assistance

Scan & Go, Drop & Go, or Car-side Appointments

You will bring your tax documents to a tax site location, where they will be scanned and returned to you.  An IRS-certified tax preparer will prepare your taxes at a different time and call you if they have questions or if additional information is needed.  You will return to the tax site at a time determined later to pick up your tax documents.

In-person Appointments (very limited availability)

Only a few sites across the State are offering this type of appointment.  Please keep in mind that in-person appointments may be converted to scan and go appointments for health and safety reasons.

Fully-remote Online Tax Assistance (No Appointment Required)

GetYourRefund Remote Tax Assistance

Take a picture of your tax documents (or scan them) and securely send them to our tax preparers online through the GetYourRefund app.  A volunteer will contact you to get the process started.  A trained, IRS-certified volunteer from your area will then prepare and double-check your tax return to make sure it is correct before filing.  Everything will happen online—even signing and filing your taxes.

Maine Moose Permit Lottery

Applications for the moose permit lottery will be accepted online only

To apply online, go to mefishwildlife.com and fill out the online moose permit application.  There, you will be able to indicate several preferences, including which wildlife management districts (WMD) you are willing to accept a permit in, and if you would accept a permit in another WMD if your name is drawn and all of your top choices are filled.  You will also be able to select your preferred hunting season, whether or not you would accept an antlerless permit, and your choice of a sub-permittee.  You will likewise be asked if you want to apply for the Adaptive Unit Hunt (WMD 4A).

Applications must be completed by 11:59 pm (ET) on May 12, 2022.

The 2022 moose lottery permit drawing will take place June 11, 2022 in Jackman, Maine.  Learn more about the drawing and one-day festival online here.

Educational Opportunity Tax Credit (Opportunity Maine)

If you earned an associate or bachelor’s degree at an eligible Maine postsecondary school – and continued to live and work in Maine after graduation – you may be eligible for an Educational Opportunity Tax Credit on your Maine income tax return.

Tax credits are based on the amount of student loan payments that you have made during the year.  The tax credit is also available to Maine businesses that make their employees’ educational loan payments.
