Whiting to Host Purple Heart Veterans Bridge Dedication September 22

The Town of Whiting will be dedicating the Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge on Sunday, September 22 at 1pm on the bridge entering Whiting Village, followed by a formal dedication ceremony at the Whiting Community Center. The ceremony will feature Down East Revolutionary War era re-enactors, members of the Lubec American Legion Honor Guard, music from the Orange River Jazz Band, and remarks by state, and local officials as well as Purple Heart survivors and descendants of Brig. Gen. John Crane who founded the Town of Whiting after the Revolutionary War. A section of Route 1 in Whiting will also be renamed in Gen. Crane’s honor at that time.

“It’s fitting that we take this opportunity to honor our American heroes, our local heroes who gave life and limb in defense of our country,” Rep. Will Tuell (R-East Machias) said. “We recently observed 9/11 and the sacrifices of those who responded to that horrific tragedy with extraordinary valor. September 20 is a day to honor those killed in action, missing in action, or prisoners of war who never made it home. It just makes sense to have this ceremony, this celebration of our purple heart veterans at the same time of year. I am thankful to the Town of Whiting for doing this, and for bringing the idea of renaming the bridge, and honoring veterans past, to me.”

Light refreshments will be served following the dedication ceremony.
