Weekly Update

April 10, 2026

Maine's Universal Immunization Program Expansion to Include Adults

Starting July 1, 2026, Maine’s Universal Immunization Program will expand vaccine access to all adults 19-64 years, including those who are underinsured, uninsured, or enrolled in MaineCare. A universal immunization program will provide many benefits to both healthcare providers and patients.

As a currently enrolled Vaccines for Children (VFC) and or Adult 317 provider, you will automatically be eligible to begin ordering adult vaccines. Adult vaccines will be added into your existing order set – no separate enrollment is required.

The only new requirement for currently enrolled providers is to submit vaccine administration numbers from the previous year (2025). This will help us estimate vaccine need for the upcoming year. If you have not administered vaccines to adults, but wish to as we move forward, please submit your best estimation for adults 19-64 in your practice that may be eligible for vaccination. Please use the following link to document your totals: Adult Vaccine Need Assessment.

For currently enrolled providers, Click here to complete the Adult Vaccine Need Assessment by June 30, 2026.

Quick Reminder: When Your Vaccine Shipment Arrives

When a vaccine shipment arrives, be sure to review it right away. Check the vaccines against the packing list to confirm everything was received, inspect the vaccines and temperature monitoring device, and make sure any required diluent is included.

Vaccines should be stored immediately upon receipt to maintain viability. Be sure to check expiration dates and rotate stock so short-dated vaccines are used first and accept the shipment in ImmPact as soon as possible. If the shipment is not accepted within 5 days of arrival, an ImmPact staff will accept the order on your behalf.

Please contact MIP immediately if the correct quantity or type of vaccine or diluent was not received, if vaccines were received in error or if there is any concern that the vaccines may have been compromised. If the temperature monitor indicates an issue, or the cold chain may have been affected, follow the guidance for vaccines received warm or questionable.

For more information, please reference our Policy and Procedures Manual .

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Season Extended, Continue to Immunize Infants and Young Children Through April

Healthcare facilities in Maine are advised to continue to make RSV monoclonal antibody products (nirsevimab or clesrovimab) available to patients and eligible infants through April 30. This represents an extension beyond the typical end date of March 30, reflecting the prolonged circulation of RSV this year.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) activity in Maine is peaking later and lasting longer than in recent years. RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalization in the U.S. For updated information on RSV circulation, see the Maine CDC Respiratory Virus Dashboard.

For additional details, see the Public Health Advisory issued March 18.
