Upcoming State of Maine Office Closures

State of Maine offices will be closed Wednesday, June 19 in observance of the Juneteenth Holiday.

We will also be closed Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 in observance of Independence Day.

Any messages will be returned the following business day when normal operations resume.

Please remember to utilize your Vaccine Management Plan in case of power outage or other emergency.

Annual Provider Education Requirement

The Maine Immunization Program requires that all primary and secondary vaccine coordinators of VFC enrolled providers must complete the Vaccines for Children Training annually. Any new vaccine coordinators must complete the training prior to starting their role as vaccine coordinator and on an annual basis moving forward.

The annual training for the 2024-2025 fiscal year will be available on the MIP website starting on July 1, 2024 and must be completed no later than October 1.

Any trainings completed prior to July 1 will not count towards satisfying the requirement in the upcoming fiscal year (July 1, 2024– June 30, 2025). Providers must complete the training by October 1 of each fiscal year.

Influenza Vaccine Expiring June 30

Influenza vaccine ordering for the 2023-2024 season and has been shut off. All influenza will be expiring June 30, 2024. Please ensure that the vaccine has been removed from your storage unit and returned to McKesson.

Open Poliovirus Vaccine (IPOL) Vials

As a reminder to providers, opened Poliovirus Vaccine (IPOL) multi-dose vials should be used until the expiration date printed on the vial unless the vaccine is contaminated or compromised, not 28 day beyond use date (BUD) listed in the package insert.

The Joint Commission has addressed the issue of discarding open multi-dose vaccine in the following Q&A:

Question: What are the Joint Commission's expectations for managing multi-dose vials of vaccines?

Answer: Vaccines are exempt from the 28-day requirement. The CDC Immunization Program states that vaccines are to be discarded per the manufacturer's expiration date. The Joint Commission is applying this approach to all vaccines - whether a part of the CDC or state immunization program or purchased by healthcare facilities - with the understanding that the vaccines are stored and handled appropriately (correct temperature is maintained, frequency of temperature checks, etc.).
