This month a new Maine law went into effect making it illegal (in most cases) for employers to ask a question on job applications about an applicant’s criminal history. Employers can only ask this question at an interview, or after they have determined that the applicant is otherwise qualified for the job. They must also allow applicants a chance to explain the conviction, and to show how they have been rehabilitated. The new law is called “An Act Relating to Fair Chance in Employment”.
