Moose Mortalities Providing Clues About Moose Survival

In 2014, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) initiated a moose survival study in Wildlife Management District 8 that involves the capture, radio-collaring, and subsequent tracking of these study animals to learn more about their behavior, reproduction, landscape use, and survivability.  The moose study was expanded to include WMD 2 this year, and now includes nearly 150 radio-collared moose. IFW Fisheries Biologists Improve Downeast Fishery

In the fall of 2010, fisheries biologists scientifically sampled Molasses Pond, a 1,252-acre water in Eastbrook, after anglers reported that landlocked salmon were in poor condition and that catch rates for brown trout and salmon was slow.  The results of the netting confirmed angler reports that growth and condition were poor (See Table 1 for comparison of 2-year old salmon). Camp North Woods Planned for Summer 2016

The Department created Camp North Woods to provide opportunities for youth and their families to learn lifelong outdoor skills as well as the importance of sustaining Maine’s natural resources. The camp has also been established to build upon the overwhelming interest by youth who have grown to love the hit TV series on Animal Planet, North Woods Law! Because there are a limited number of spaces at Camp North Woods, a chance lottery will be held on May 9, 2016. The deadline for the lottery is April 29, 2016. READ MORE

Commissioner Woodcock participated in a number of public events during the month of March, including the 78th Annual Eastern Maine Sportsman's Show, the Sportsman's Forum at the Bucks Mills Rod & Gun Club, the 5th Annual Western Maine Fly Fishing Expo. Additionally he swore-in Sgt Aaron Cross at the IFW Headquarers and addressed the attendees at the Maine Warden Service Annual Awards Banquet and the Annual Maine Wildlife Park Volunteer Banquet.

 

Maine Wildlife Park Opens April 15!
