Ice Fishing for Brook Trout in Central and Southern Maine

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife stocks thousands of brook trout each year to provide ice anglers with an opportunity to catch Maine’s heritage fish, without needing to stray too far from home. These trout are stocked to provide anglers with the thrill of catching these beautiful fish, and to allow them to harvest a fish or two to take home for a wonderful meal. Read more »

Department Seeks Input On Maine’s Most Popular Wildlife and Fish Species

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife wants to hear your ideas and opinions about Maine’s most popular wildlife and fish species.

Over the next month, the department will hold a series of statewide public meetings that will focus on moose, deer and turkey; bear, and freshwater fisheries. The meetings are designed to gather ideas and information from the public that will help shape management of these species over the next fifteen years. Read more »

Maine HERON: Photos from 2015

The Heron Observation Network (HERON) is a group of volunteers who monitor great blue heron colonies for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). Annually since 2009, they have been keeping track of more than 100 colonies to help MDIFW better understand the status of great blue herons across the state. This video is a showcase of photos taken by volunteers and staff throughout the 2015 colony monitoring season. Read more »

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife conserves all of Maine’s wildlife for current and future generations. Hunting revenues provides funding for the management of game species such as deer, turkey, and bear, but funding for lesser known nongame species that can’t be hunted or trapped has been difficult to find.
