Public Hearing on Packaging Stewardship Program Set for This Week.

The Department is notifying interested parties that formal rulemaking has begun in response to Public Law 2021 c. 455, An Act To Support and Improve Municipal Recycling Programs and Save Taxpayer Money, now codified as Packaging Stewardship Program, 38 M.R.S. § 2146, with the goals of reducing the burden to municipalities for managing packaging material and improving the design and management of packaging material.

The Department presented the proposed Chapter 428 rule to the Board on Environmental Protection during the meeting that took place on January 18, 2024. The Board decided to hold a public hearing and to publish the proposed Chapter 428 rule for public comment.

The public hearing will be held during the Board’s March 7th meeting at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Maine. An agenda for the meeting can be found on the Board of Environmental Protection’s calendar. The meeting will be offered virtually for viewing purposes only; those who wish to provide comment can do so in person at the public hearing or in writing. Comments can be emailed to MainePackagingEPR@maine.gov or mailed to 17 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04333. The deadline for submitting comments is March 18, 2024, 11:59 pm EST.
