COUNCIL MEMBERS ATTEND MARYLAND MUNICIPAL LEAGUE CONFERENCE IN OCEAN CITY
       With no Council meeting on Tuesday, several Council Members headed to Ocean City to attend Maryland Municipal League’s annual Summer Conference, from Sunday, June 22 through Wednesday, June 25. There are twenty-seven municipalities in Prince George's County, the largest number of any county in the state. Council Members, as well as many of their staff and employees of the Prince George’s County Legislative Branch, attended various expos and presentations, educational workshops and forums, networking events, keynote speeches, and more. The conference was a great opportunity for many of the county government’s elected leaders and staff to meet or reconnect with representatives from municipalities across the county. Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller also attended.
   On the final day of the conference, Council Members Jolene Ivey (At-Large), Wanika Fisher (District 2), Eric Olson (District 3), Ingrid S. Watson (District 4), Shayla Adams-Stafford (District 5), and Calvin Hawkins (At-Large) hosted a breakfast to connect with community leaders and share ideas.
VICE CHAIR ORIADHA TOURS SUITLAND HIGH SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION
   Construction on the first phase of the new Suitland High School is nearing completion, and on Tuesday, June 24, Council Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha (District 7) joined other elected officials, including District 7 School Board Member Phelton Moss, for a tour of the progress. They saw a massive auditorium, multiple gymnasiums, tech spaces, and more. PGCPS is using a phased approach to replace the more than 50-year-old existing high school building, while minimizing the displacement of students. The first phase is expected to open to students in January.
COMMITTEE FAVORABLY RECOMMENDS BILL SUPPORTING LAID-OFF FEDERAL WORKERS
 
A bill to help laid-off federal workers is moving forward with a favorable recommendation from the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee on Thursday, June 26. The bill, CB-24-2025, proposed by Council Member Wala Blegay (District 6) and Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha (District 7), offers penalty-free property tax deferments of up to six months and free job training through Prince George’s Community College for impacted residents. Local businesses could also receive hiring incentives, like tax credits, for hiring former federal employees. The bill would also require the county to establish a preferred hiring process and create a Federal Worker Food Assistance Program, using vouchers in partnership with local grocery stores and expanding access to food banks.

ER WAIT TIME TASK FORCE PREPARES FINAL REPORT

The Council’s Emergency Room Wait Time Task Force, led by Council Member Wala Blegay (District 6), is preparing its final report and official recommendations after months of investigating the root causes of extraordinarily long wait times at hospitals in the county. The task force met on Thursday, June 26, to begin drafting the final report. The group visited every emergency room in the county and spoke to experts about the problems they are facing. The goal is to present solutions to the Council to improve emergency room care and efficiency at every hospital in the county. |

CHAIR BURROUGHS JOINS LAUNCH OF PROJECT ELEVATE PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, CO-HOSTS YOUTH LUNCHEON
   Chair Edward Burroughs (District 8) joined County Executive Aisha Braveboy and Department of Public Works and Transportation leaders as they launched the Countywide Litter and Beautification Blitz, Project Elevate Prince George's! This is a new initiative to maintain clean, safe, and vibrant communities. From pothole repairs, to litter removal, to tree pruning, residents will see a commitment to a better and more beautiful Prince George's County! Additionally, Chair Burroughs, Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha (District 7), and Council Member Shayla Adams-Stafford (District 5), joined Montgomery County Council Member Laurie-Anne Sayles for a special joint luncheon, bringing their youth programs together for a day of connection, empowerment, and fun.
VICE CHAIR ORIADHA ATTENDS PRIDE RECEPTION, JOINS CIVIC ASSOCIATION EVENTS, AND HOSTS CRAB FEAST
   Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha (District 7) was honored to join Gov. Moore at the 2025 Pride Reception at Government House. It was wonderful to celebrate love, inclusion, and progress with leaders from across Maryland. Vice Chair Oriadha also joined the Suitland Civic Association for their meeting, talking to constituents about key issues and changes happening in the county. Additionally, she was honored to join, support, and sponsor the Hillcrest-Marlow Heights Civic Association’s 2025 Dollars for Scholars Awards Ceremony. Investing in our youth is investing in our future! Finally, Vice Chair Oriadha hosted an amazing Crab Feast! No chair was left open, no crab uncracked and most importantly no one left without a smile. From the vendors, to the DJ, to the band, to the volunteers, and colleagues who took time to stop by, thank you! The Vice Chair looks forward to making this a yearly event.
COUNCIL MEMBER BLEGAY JOINS COMMUNITY DAY, LAKE ARBOR DAY, YOUTH EMPOWERMENT EVENT, AFRICAN FASHION SHOW
   Council Member Wala Blegay (District 6) had a great time joining Asia from Magic 102.3 in Forestville for Community Day, as well as attending the Lake Arbor Day celebration. She was also honored to attend the Inaugural Youth Empowerment Conference hosted by 100 Black Men of Prince George’s County, serving as a panelist on the Policy & Government with Youth panel to speak directly to the next generation about the importance of civic engagement, leadership, and preparing for the future. Finally, she attended the African Cultural Fashion Show, and is thankful to Temmy and all the amazing leaders who put together such a beautiful event that celebrated our culture in the community.
COUNCIL MEMBER IVEY ATTENDS HEALTH FAIR AND SENATOR’S MONTHLY MEETING
   Council Member Jolene Ivey (At-Large) attended the District 47 Health Fair and enjoyed supporting members of the community and the state delegation D47 at their event. She also attended Senator Benson’s monthly meeting and had a chance to answer questions about the county budget. She values hearing the voices of our community and working together for a stronger and more connected community!
COUNCIL MEMBER WATSON HOSTS COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR WITH CHILDREN’S NATIONAL HOSPITAL
   Council Member Ingrid S. Watson (District 4) partnered with Children’s National Hospital for her “Four the Health of It” community health fair on June 21. The event highlighted the importance of pediatric health and access to care in Prince George’s County, where 40% of Children’s National’s Maryland patients reside. Attendees learned about health and wellness programs and resources available in the county and took advantage of free vaccines, health screenings, wellness resources, employment assistance, family-friendly activities, food and giveaways.
