COUNCIL TO VOTE ON REAPPOINTMENTS TO FIRE COMMISSION |

The Fire Commission must annually formulate a capital budget, Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and a current expense budget for all volunteer fire companies with respect to the expenditure of public funds. On Monday, May 13th, the Council’s Committee on Health, Human Services and Public Safety (HHSPS) approved the nomination of the following individuals to the Fire Commission: Ms. Gloria J. Bell (Volunteer Member), Ms. Michelle A. Chandler (Career Member), Ms. Lisa Ray (Volunteer Member), Mr. Marlon E. Selmon (Resident Member), and Mr. Kyle J. Snyder (Volunteer Member). The County Council will take a final vote on the nominees on May 28th, 2024.

BILLS ADVANCE IN PLANNING, HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Members of the Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee (PHED) advanced a pair of bills at their meeting on Thursday, May 17th, 2024. CB-2-2024 would amend the Housing Code to allow notices of violation, civil citations, and administrative citations to be emailed so that property owners receive notices in a more timely manner. CB-15-2024 seeks to improve implementation of the County’s new, streamlined Zoning Ordinance by revising certain procedures and regulations, and adding clarifying language. Also on Thursday, the Prince George’s County Planning Department provided a presentation on Plan 2035 implementation entitled “Managing Development and Growth Outside Centers and Outside the Beltway.”

The event took place at Mix and Mingle Coffee Lounge in Clinton, and celebrated mothers, grandmothers, and all those who fill a maternal role in our lives. This heartwarming gathering was organized in partnership with Love You More, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization with a mission of promoting women’s empowerment within the community.

Council Member At-Large Calvin Hawkins, on Thursday, May 16th, hosted the 14th Annual Seniors Emergency Preparedness Luncheon at the Newton White Mansion. Following a presentation from Rasheed Plummer of the Office of Emergency Management on how seniors can prepare for natural disasters and other emergencies, the group enjoyed live music and delicious food! Council Member Hawkins is committed to ensuring that Prince George’s County seniors have the necessary resources to survive in emergencies, as well as the necessary community to thrive in their daily lives.
COMMUNITY BABY SHOWER PROVIDES MOTHERS IN NEED WITH ESSENTIAL INFORMATION AND CARE

Council Chair Jolene Ivey also atteneded to honor SheRises with a Council Citation. The event offered a nurturing environment for new and expecting mothers to connect with community resources, receive valuable information, and celebrate this special time in their lives. SheRises provided baby items like diapers, wipes, and other mom and baby essentials, and activities included Mommy Massages by Joyful Bodies Therapeutics and Infant CPR demos by Rescue One. Council Members were thrilled to take part in showering new and expecting moms with love and care!
