Council Member Sydney Harrison (District 9) was elected to serve as Vice Chair. Chair Ivey and Vice Chair Harrison will serve in leadership through December 3, 2024.
Accepting the Council’s Gavel of Leadership, Chair Ivey evoked the memory of her late father Joseph Stephenson, as she committed to leading a unified Council.
“Whether serving on the battlefield as an Army Captain and Buffalo Soldier, in the classroom as a teacher, or at home as our father, my Dad always led by bringing people together. He understood that a group working together towards a common goal, a common mission, and a true understanding of what is required of them could overcome almost any obstacle or barrier in their path. This is the kind of unity this Council requires, and the unity our residents deserve.”
During remarks to a standing-room-only audience in the Council’s Hearing Room, Chair Ivey also addressed the 2024 legislative agenda. Among the items noted were the prioritization of policies that diversify the County’s revenue streams; fully staffing public safety positions; diversifying the County’s tax base; and delivering efficient services.
Chair Ivey, a resident of Cheverly, was elected to serve her first term on the Prince George’s County Council in the 2018 General Election and was recently reelected for her second four-year term in November 2022. Vice Chair Harrison was elected to serve his first term in 2018.
