Community Member Recognition

This edition's community member being recognized for outstanding service efforts is Mrs. Tasya Jones, formerly Arrington. Tasya is an exemplary and dynamic leader known for her unwavering dedication and proactive approach. She is the Director of M.E.R.C.Y. House (Mountain Top Emergency Resource Center for You), located at 4402 Cedell Place, Temple Hills, MD 20748. MERCY House, established in 2007 by Bishop Lanier C. Twyman, Sr., Senior Pastor of St. Stephen Baptist Church, has thrived under her leadership.

In 2010, upon becoming a St. Stephen Baptist Church member, Tasya seamlessly transitioned into her role, utilizing her talents and passion to the fullest. As a testament to her commitment, she was honored with the "Faithful Servant" Award by the Executive Team Leaders of St. Stephen Baptist Church. Mrs. Jones has transformed M.E.R.C.Y House into a vital resource hub for Prince George's County, often referred to as a well-kept secret.

Under Tasya's dedicated leadership, M.E.R.C.Y House offers a wealth of resources, including rental assistance, cancer support, youth mentorship, job skills training, mental health services, domestic violence support, and assistance for veterans and Alzheimer's patients. Additionally, M.E.R.C.Y House offers anyone in need essential items such as clothing, shoes, school uniforms, furniture, appliances, household goods, toiletries, and emergency food. Every November, the M.E.R.C.Y House team organizes a heartwarming initiative to donate coats, socks, and gloves to a District 8 school to help students stay warm during winter.

Tasya Jones exemplifies leadership and community engagement, consistently offering her invaluable support. Her active participation in P.T.S.A. meetings, community liaison partnerships, career awareness programs, and community events reflects her unwavering commitment to Prince George's County residents. Tasya's work and her extensive network have profoundly impacted the community she serves.

The Prince George's County Family Justice Center provides technical assistance, consulting services, and resources to communities around the world. They are the clearinghouse, research center, and national affiliation organization for Family Justice Centers and other Multi-Agency Centers serving survivors of interpersonal violence.

The extended hours will allow the PGCFJC to provide greater accessibility to survivors of domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking. The PGCFJC will now be open later on Thursdays and Fridays. In addition, beginning July 15, 2023, the PCGFJC will be open on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

• Monday – Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
• Thursday – 8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
• Friday – 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Saturday – 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. (Beginning July 15th)

The District 8 team is diligently and collaboratively working to prepare  legislation that improves the lives of our community members.

Legislative Updates

CB 4423 "The Gas Station Credit Price Signing"

Yesterday, CB 4423, "The Gas Station Credit Price Signing" bill passed 10-1! Council Member Burroughs III highlighted the importance of increasing consumer confidence in the county by enforcing laws safeguarding our residents' interests and promoting honesty and integrity among local businesses. This bill requires gas stations to advertise accurate gas prices for each payment method.

 I want to extend a heartfelt appreciation to Pleshette from our District 8 team for her exceptional leadership and dedication in introducing this important legislation to regulate the display of accurate gas station prices.

 Her commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in pricing practices within our community is truly commendable. Team District 8 is grateful to have Pleshette as a member of our team.

150 students received tablets, bookbags, school supplies, and lunch from Chick-fil-a.

Team District 8 joined the Le Detroit Baptist Church family to support students returning to school at their Back to School Prayer Tour. 

Team District 8 Colin Byrd, accompanied by his father and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity members, welcomed students at Forest Heights Elementary School on their first day of school.

Back to School Immunization Clinics in Prince George’s County

The Prince George's County Health Department is pleased to announce the launch of its highly anticipated back-to-school flu and immunization clinic initiative, which aims to prioritize the health and well-being of students as they prepare to return to the classroom for the upcoming school year.
The Health Department offers comprehensive services, including routine immunization to protect against childhood diseases and COVID-19 vaccinations. Also, flu shots will be available for County residents aged six months and older. Services are offered to residents with limited or no health insurance. Additionally, the clinics operate on a sliding fee scale based on income, ensuring every child can access essential vaccines regardless of their financial situation.
The Health Department remains steadfast in ensuring every child can access the necessary vaccines for a successful school year. The Health Department offers extended weekend and evening hours for the back-to-school clinics this year.

Health Department Immunization Back-to-School Clinic Schedule:

1. The Cheverly Health Center (3003 Hospital Drive, Cheverly, MD 20785) offers back-to-school immunizations:

• Mondays – Fridays 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
• Extended Evening Hours: Tuesday, September 5 – Friday, September 8 Tuesday, September 12 – Friday, September 15 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM
• Extended Weekend Hours: Saturday, September 9 Saturday, September 16 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

2. The Maternal and Child Health Center at Laurel (14207 Park Center Drive, Suite 102, Laurel, MD 20707) offers back-to-school immunizations:

Assistance Programs

Utility Relief Assistance Program offered from H.O.P.E. & Stone of Help CDC

Households at or below 80% AMI that have not received utility assistance from Prince George’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) are eligible for ONE-TIMEfinancial assistance payment per property address for past due electric, gas, or water bills up to $500. Applicants will need to contact H.O.P.E. for further details on how to apply for assistance.
