COUNTY COUNCIL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE GRANT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS; NONPROFITS MUST APPLY BY SEPTEMBER 9th |
The Prince George’s County Council is accepting online applications for the FY 2023 Prince George’s County Council Domestic Violence Grant Program through 5:00 p.m., on Friday, September 9, 2022. The Council’s Domestic Violence Program supports survivors in the County by providing funding support to programs serving their housing, workforce development, mental health counseling, and legal advocacy needs. County Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, urges local nonprofits to apply for funding. “Working together with nonprofits serving our community, we can vastly improve the lives of those impacted by domestic violence. We encourage our local nonprofits to continue partnering with us to address the pervasive issue of domestic violence.”

BACK TO SCHOOL!
 Prince George’s County Schools are well on the way to an exciting school year with the first full week of school now completed! Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II and Council Vice-Chair Sydney Harrison teamed up to greet students at Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro, upon arrival on Monday morning. Vice-Chair Harrison is a proud Douglass High School alumnus. The Council looks forward to a very productive school year for County students!
DISTRICT 8 COUNCIL MEMBER EDWARD BURROUGHS JOINS FOX 5 ZIP TRIP SUMMER FINALE AT NATIONAL HARBOR
 District 8 Council Member Edward Burroughs, III was the featured guest for the Fox 5 Zip Trip 2022 Talk of the Town segment, airing live Friday morning from National Harbor. Council Member Burroughs shared all things District 8 and Prince George’s County with viewers!
UPDATE: DISTRICT 2 COUNCIL MEMBER DENI TAVERAS DISCUSSES IMPACT OF ROE V. WADE REVERSAL WITH NBC 4 NEWS ANCHOR SHAWN YANCY
 The July 5th issue of Council Connection shared with subscribers that District 2 Council Member Deni Taveras participated in the taping of an NBC 4 segment, “Inequality in America: Roe V. Wade Repeal Impact,” with news anchor Shawn Yancy; the Rev. Dr. Cheryl J. Sanders, Senior Pastor, Third Street Church of God; and American University Professor Sara Kaplan, Antiracist Research & Policy Center, to discuss the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, and its impact, especially on women of color. This program aired on August 13th.
COUNCIL VICE CHAIR SYDNEY HARRISON LEADS “STOP THE VIOLENCE COMMUNITY WALK” IN DISTRICT 9
 On August 24th, Council Vice-Chair and District 9 Council Member Sydney Harrison and the District 9 Team partnered with Police Chief Malik Aziz and Prince George’s County Police, District V, and approximately 200 participating community members to host the District 9 “Stop the Violence Community Walk.” Council Vice Chair Harrison thanked all participants, including government agencies, nonprofits, faith-based leaders, and the business community, for their assistance and support, adding there is still work to do. “There is so much work we all must do together to eradicate violence in our community. We will continue to be visible and vigilant and continue these walks with community members and law enforcement. Over the next few weeks, we look forward to visiting with communities throughout District 9 to bring awareness, build relationships, and seek positive solutions.”
CHAIR HAWKINS WELCOMES THE DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. 53RD EASTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE TO PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
 On Thursday evening, Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, welcomed the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. 53rd Eastern Regional Conference to Prince George’s County and National Harbor, as they gather in the thousands to “Elevate Excellence in the East!” Four host chapters – Fort Washington Alumnae, Prince George’s County Alumnae, Kappa Phi (University of Maryland College Park) and Zeta Delta (Bowie State University) – are enthusiastically working to provide a great conference experience. Chair Hawkins is pictured (L-R) with WUSA TV 9 News Anchor Lesli Foster, Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks, and Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Dr. Monica Goldson.
LEGISLATIVE BRANCH CELEBRATES SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM INTERNS
 The Prince George’s County Council celebrated its summer interns with a luncheon at the conclusion of the County’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) on Friday, August 12th. The interns participated in SYEP, an annual program offering County residents, ages 14 to 22, enriching and constructive summer work experiences in community organizations, private sector companies and local government.
Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, congratulated the interns on a job well done for the Legislative Branch, “Words cannot fully express how proud we are of our young people who served the Council through the County’s summer jobs program and to celebrate their accomplishments. They provided a glimpse into the very bright future of our County.”
Council Administrator Robert Williams, Jr. and administrative staff also addressed interns at the luncheon. Special Assistant to the Council Administrator Lisa Chinn, coordinated this year’s program. “I congratulate them for staying on task and we look forward to next year!” Included among the eight interns working for the Legislative Branch were Jaelin Porter, Alana Scott, Sydney Braithwaite, Yahzee Carino, Brandon Eleby, Destiny Fortune, Katherine Fuentes, and Kathleen Rosario.
