COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS JOIN MARYLAND MUNICIPAL LEAGUE SUMMER CONFERENCE AND EXPO
Prince George’s County Council Members were among the hundreds of Maryland city and town officials gathered in Ocean City, Maryland for the 2022 Maryland Municipal League (MML) Summer Conference and Expo, June 12-15. The MML is a statewide association for the 157 Maryland cities & towns, and the conference provides an important opportunity to discuss municipal issues and network with city and town officials.

 During the conference, Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, addressed the Prince George’s County Municipal Association (PGCMA), an association of Prince George’s County elected and appointed municipal leaders working together to benefit the residents of our 27 municipalities, Prince George’s County, and the State of Maryland. PGCMA is also one of nine regional chapters of the Maryland Municipal League, created for the purpose of facilitating communication and cooperation within the League and between municipalities and other levels of state and local government.

COUNTY COUNCIL CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH COUNTY HOLIDAY
 The Prince George’s County Council, recognizing the history and contributions of African Americans in Prince George’s County and across the nation, will join residents in celebration of Juneteenth on Sunday, June 19, 2022. The official public holiday is on Monday, June 20, 2022.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom or Emancipation Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and marks the day Union Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas to issue the President’s Executive Order known as the Emancipation Proclamation. Council Bill-078-2022, unanimously adopted by the County Council on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, expresses continued support for the celebration of Juneteenth National Freedom Day, a regular holiday in Prince George’s County.
While Juneteenth marks a pivotal day in history and a day of remembrance, it is also an important opportunity to honor and celebrate Black history, heritage, culture, and the many achievements and contributions of African Americans. This day of national pride is celebrated with food, music, games, and other events and activities across Prince George’s County to promote cultural awareness and community cohesiveness.

PROUD TO VOTE - ELECTION PROCESS UPDATE
 The Prince George’s County Board of Elections has released its 2022 PROUD TO VOTE Toolkit ahead of the 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Election. The deadline to register to vote, update your address, or change party affiliation is Tuesday, June 28, 2022. The deadline to submit a Vote By Mail Application is Tuesday, July 12, 2022. PLANNING, HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REVIEWS PROPOSED LEGISLATION; RECEIVES PLANNING DEPARTMENT BRIEFING
The Planning, Housing, and Economic Development (PHED) committee met virtually on Thursday, June 16th, to review proposed legislation – CR-066-2022, which continues the extension of the temporary suspension of certain restrictions on outdoor seating, providing for the extension of a temporary expedited administrative process to authorize outdoor dining to otherwise lawful eating and drinking establishment uses on adjacent exterior space, or shared exterior space, under certain circumstances to further economic recovery. The measure was held in committee. PHED committee members also received the Annual Work Program Overview of Master Plans, Sector Plans, and Sectional Map Amendments in a briefing presented by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Planning Department.
Council Member At-Large Mel Franklin serves as PHED Committee Chair and District 3 Council Member Dannielle Glaros serves as Committee Vice-Chair. PHED committee members include Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, Council Vice-Chair Sydney Harrison, and District 4 Council Member Todd M. Turner. The next meeting of the PHED committee is scheduled for July 7, 2022, at 10 a.m.

HEALTH, HUMAN SERVICES AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE REVIEWS PROPOSED LEGISLATION
The Health, Human Services, and Public Safety (HHSPS) committee, met virtually on Thursday, June 16th, for a review of CB-053-2022, eliminating Food Truck Hubs and authorizing Food Truck vending in certain locations in Prince George’s County. Council Vice-Chair Sydney Harrison serves as Chair of the HHSPS committee. The committee voted to hold the legislation for further discussion. District 1 Council Member Tom Dernoga serves as Committee Vice-Chair. Council Member At-Large Mel Franklin, District 7 Council Member Rodney Streeter, and District 6 Council Member Johnathan Medlock serve as HHSPS committee members. The next scheduled HHSPS committee meeting is scheduled for September 15, 2022, at 1:30 p.m.

 Attending an upcoming event or gathering? Reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by getting tested as close to the event date as possible. The Prince George’s County Health Department reminds residents to get tested for COVID-19:
- If you have COVID-19 symptoms
- At least 5 days after known or suspected close contact to COVID-19
- For screening (schools, workplaces, congregate settings, etc.)
- Before and after travel
- When asked by a healthcare professional or public health official

GRAB & GO GROCERIES/MEALS ON SATURDAY!
 The County’s Stand Up & Deliver program, a continuing initiative addressing food security concerns, will distribute free Grab & Go Groceries and Meals, this Saturday, June 18TH , at 9:00 a.m., Kingdom Fellowship at High Point High School in Beltsville and at the First Baptist Church of Highland Park in Landover. There will also be a free distribution at 10 a.m., at the Ebenezer Church of God in Landover Hills; the Community of Hope A.M.E. Church in Forestville; and the Love A.M.E. Church at Capitol Heights Elementary School in Capitol Heights; and the Maryland Shiloh Apostolic Church in Temple Hills. Distribution is also scheduled for 11 a.m., at the United Baptist Church in New Carrollton. Please see flyer for details. While supplies last. One box per vehicle. Please remain in your vehicle.

COUNCIL VICE CHAIR SYDNEY HARRISON AND COUNCIL MEMBER AT-LARGE MEL FRANKLIN ATTEND GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW SENIOR COMMUNITY
 On Thursday, Council Vice-Chair and District 9 Council Member Sydney Harrison and Council Member At-Large Mel Franklin were among the officials attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the Residences at Springbrook senior community in Clinton. The Residences at Springbrook is a new construction, planned senior apartment community with 90 affordable units made possible through community development partners. The apartment buildings will include a large multi-purpose community room with a kitchenette, community room, computer work stations, party room, fitness center, cafe', common areas and laundry rooms. The Residences at Springbrook is projected for completion in 18-24 months.
COUNCIL CHAIR CALVIN S. HAWKINS, II ADDRESSES FATHER’S DAY PLEDGE INITIATIVE EVENT
 On Monday, June 13th, Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, joined County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Sheriff Melvin High, and other officials to address the third Father’s Day Pledge Initiative hosted by the County’s Department of Family Services, Office of the Sheriff, and the Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys. The Father’s Day Pledge Initiative brings together fathers, young men, uncles, women, businesses, and community organizations together to act and inspire change to prevent violence against women, led by men. This was the focus of Chair Hawkins’ remarks. Additionally, several fathers and/or father figures were acknowledged by the Prince George's County Commission on Father's Men and Boys.

 The celebration of Father’s Day reminds us about both the importance and the challenges of fatherhood in our families and communities.
