The Prince George’s County Council continues to operate under the Prince George’s County State of Emergency Declaration, effective March 16, 2020, and extended by the Governing Body of Prince George’s County with the adoption of CR-137-2021 on November 29, 2021. The Council’s Emergency Operations Procedures became effective pursuant to CR-10-2020, adopted on March 17, 2020, and amended pursuant to CR-35-2020, adopted on May 18, 2020.  The Rules of Procedure for the County Council and District Council have been amended, pursuant to CR-57-2020 and CR-58-2020, respectively, adopted on July 21, 2020, for virtual and remote public participation before each body.

EXCHANGE OF THE GAVEL - PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTS 2022 LEADERSHIP TEAM CHAIR CALVIN HAWKINS AND VICE CHAIR SYDNEY HARRISON

The Prince George’s County Council, convening virtually on Tuesday, December 8, 2021, for its Gavel Exchange ceremony, unanimously reelected At-Large Council Member Calvin S. Hawkins, II, to serve as Chair for Legislative Year 2022. Council Member Sydney Harrison (D- District 9) was unanimously elected by his colleagues to serve as Vice-Chair. Chair Hawkins and Vice-Chair Harrison will serve in leadership through December 6, 2022.  Chair Hawkins thanked his colleagues for the opportunity to serve as Chair, and for entrusting him with the Gavel of Leadership for a second consecutive year.    “I want to sincerely thank my distinguished colleagues on the Prince George’s County Council for the coveted privilege of presiding over this august body over the past Legislative Year. I am humbled beyond words to accept the Gavel of Leadership once again for Legislative Year 2022 and promise to meet the moment with integrity, unity, and clear purpose.”

COUNCIL MEMBER DERRICK L. DAVIS RECEIVES COG’S HIGHEST HONOR - ELIZABETH AND DAVID SCULL METROPOLITAN PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD

Prince George’s County Council Member Derrick Leon Davis (D-District 6) was presented with the Elizabeth and David Scull Metropolitan Public Service Award by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), during its Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. Council Member Davis was honored for his regional efforts to support transit-oriented communities. During his tenure as COG Board Chair in 2020, Council Member Davis prioritized planning efforts related to transit-oriented communities and led the adoption of a COG Board resolution establishing equity as a fundamental COG value. In a Council of Governments news release dated December 8, 2021, COG Board Vice Chair and Arlington County Board Member Christian Dorsey, who presented Davis with the award stated, “Derrick Davis has his fingerprints over much of what the COG Board has accomplished over the last 5 years. Through his leadership in chairing initiatives and the Board, his infectious boosterism of our region, and willingness to ‘walk the walk’ in seeking consensus, he has epitomized the spirit of the Scull Metropolitan Public Service Award.”   READ MORE

COVID-19 VACCINE CLINIC UPDATE

The County’s Health Department operates COVID-19 vaccine clinics at County schools for residents ages five and older. Vaccines for children 5 to 11 years old are also available at the County’s Sports and Learning Complex, pediatricians’ offices, pharmacies, and other health care providers in the County.  IMPORTANT Vaccine Clinic Update - No walk-ins are permitted at the Sports and Learning Complex COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Monday, December 13, 2021.

The County’s Stand Up & Deliver program, in a continuing initiative to address food security concerns, will distribute Grab & Go groceries at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 11th, at five locations in the County.  See flyer for details.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY EMERGENCY RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM APPLICATION DEADLINE - DECEMBER 15TH The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) will close the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) application portal on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 3:00 PM. The ERAP will continue to review and process remaining applications after the application portal closes. Closing the application portal will ensure that DHCD has the funding needed for the open applications that still need to be processed for payment, including applications received between now and December 15. Council Members were in attendance for the annual Prince George's County Association of Realtors Legislative Breakfast on Wednesday, December 8^th.  Pictured are Council Vice-Chair Sydney Harrison at the podium, and also on stage (L to R) District 5 Council Member Jolene Ivey and District 3 Council Member Dannielle Glaros.  This annual event offers an opportunity for realtors in the County and Prince George’s County legislators and other elected officials to meet and discuss important matters affecting the County.

District 4 Council Member Todd Turner and At-Large Council Member Mel Franklin joined government leaders and legislators participating in the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) Winter Conference, December 8-10 in Cambridge, Maryland.  The MACo Winter Conference, “Time to Reboot: Tomorrow’s Tech Today,” focused on how county governments are approaching technology, and what tools can help them provide state-of-the-art services for Maryland residents.
