As I promised during my campaign for office, my staff and I have been working diligently to bring back two-day-a-week trash pickup, leaf pickup, and more consistent bulk trash pick up to our county. We understand the importance of adding an additional trash day for health and environmental reasons.
In 2017, Prince George’s Council Member Karen Toles passed legislation that required County Executive Rushern L. Baker III to reexamine the matter of refuse collection and prepare a report to review the feasibility of one day a week refuse collection.
My office has been working on retrieving this report and presenting additional solutions.
In December 2020, our office formally submitted a request to draft legislation that would reexamine the financial impact from twice-a-week trash collection to once-a-week trash collection. We also requested to examine the documented concerns the residents have expressed since the second trash pickup day has been removed.
Following our submittal, my staff and I met with County Executive Alsobrooks in January 2021, in which the County Executive agreed that we should push forward due to the volume of household trash and the health concerns attributed with trash build-up in homes.
With these successes, I am confident that we are working to provide solutions for two-day trash pick-up in the next coming months.
