Greetings District 8 Neighbors,
July is going to be a monumental month in District 8, as we host two stellar events, one nationally recognized and the other locally renowned. This will be the first time both events are being hosted in District Gr8!
National Association of Counties (NACo), a Washington, D.C. based association, will host their annual conference and exposition for county elected and appointed officials at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in District 8 on July 9-12, 2021. This will be the first major event at the Gaylord since the pandemic sidelined much of the conference and hospitality industry.
District 8 is working with NACo to feature highlights and activities in our District for the conference and incorporating the benefits of District 8 being a destination wellness hub. We are excited to welcome the NACo leadership and members for their 2021 annual conference and being a part of their unprecedented conference with in-person and virtual sessions. June is Flood Awareness Month, though in District 8 and throughout the county and region, we are very aware of flooding all year, resulting from storm water management issues, dated infrastructures and climate change. In this issue, there are some tips for flooding and ways to care for our pets in hot weather and in flooding situations. There is a Storm Water Management Workshop next Tuesday you can register for, more information below.
June is also Gun Violence Awareness Month. In District 8, we are presenting gun violence awareness and mental health support to high school students. We want to make a difference. Our interactive sessions will provide facts and dialogue to help process good decisions, change behavior and provide comfort to those who have been impacted.
This issue shares tutoring resources and the exciting opening of Prince George's new hospital.

We apologize for communicating in our May 25 Orange Alert that Justice the service dog was found and reunited with the owner. Unfortunately, this is not the case and Justice is still out in the community.
UPDATE: Justice was last spotted on Sunday, May 16, 2021, in the area of Livingston Road & Swan Creek Road, Fort Washington, MD.
Justice has a very crucial role in the life of the owner. A service dog helps a person with a disability lead a more independent life. Service animals are specifically trained to work with a person with a disability which makes it easier for its owner to accomplish one or more major life activities, including caring for oneself, working, performing manual tasks, sleeping, walking, and numerous other activities.
Please call (407) 922-9551 if you have seen Justice or have any information that will lead to a successful reunion.

Make a Pet Emergency Plan
- ID your pet. Make sure your pet’s tags are up-to-date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Also consider microchipping your pets.
- Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes.
- Make a pet emergency kit.
Check out this quick list:
- Pet food
- Bottled water
- Medications
- Veterinary records
- Cat litter/pan
- Manual can opener
- Food dishes
- First aid kit and other supplies
- Identify shelters. For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets. Find out which motels and hotels in the area you plan to evacuate to allow pets well in advance of needing them. There are also a number of guides that list hotels/motels that permit pets and could serve as a starting point. Include your local animal shelter's number in your list of emergency numbers.
- Make sure you have a secure pet carrier, leash or harness for your pet so that if he panics, he can't escape.
