County News

New Police Chief named

County Executive Angela Alsobrooks named Dallas  Deputy Chief Malik Aziz to be the next Prince George's County Police Chief

Mr. Malik Aziz of the Dallas Police Department in Dallas, Texas, and has been with the Police Department for 29 years.

Community input was reviewed and kept it at the top of mind as County Executive Alsobrooks and her team conducted a thorough interview process to narrow own candidates. The County Executive met personally with all of the finalists to make sure they were choosing the right person to meet this critical moment for our County.

Deputy Chief Aziz stood out as an individual who is reform-minded and has always placed an emphasis on the importance of community policing. As such he is the individual we felt was suited to take this Department into the future as we work to become a model for the nation.

Mr. Aziz joined the Dallas Police Department in 1992 as a patrol officer. He worked his way through the ranks and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2008.

Deputy Chief Aziz has been a strong advocate for reform in his current role with the Dallas Police Department and through his advocacy at the national level. County Executive Alsobrooks is confident he will continue working with us on the critical reforms that we are already implementing from our Police Reform Work Group recommendations, and she knows he will find additional ways to bring transformative change to our Department.

Overall, the County Executive believes that Deputy Chief Aziz will bring a fresh perspective to our Department, and  cannot wait for Prince Georgians to get to know him. Deputy Chief Aziz has all of the qualities that our community, and our Police Department were looking for in our next Chief of Police. He strikes the perfect balance of both caring for the officers under his supervision and caring for the community members that he serves. He strives to make sure the best interests of the Department and the community are always met, because they are not mutually exclusive.

County Executive Alsobrooks says, once Deputy Chief Aziz officially takes over on May 9, he has assured us he will work hard to meet with our community and the Department to get to know you and earn your trust. Once Prince Georgians and the men and women of our Department get to know him as she has, they will see why he is the perfect person to lead our Police Department to new heights.
