Greetings District 8 Neighbors!
Last August, we had festive community gatherings in District 8 on National Night Out. I have to tell you that this month, I really missed talking, laughing, line dancing, eating, meeting, hugging, capturing the memories by taking photos and spending time with you at this yearly event. All ages are present and it is indeed a night we all come together, excited to see one another, realizing we are all a part of the same community, DistrictGr8.
We are resilient, but we are also human. I know many of us would like to wake up one day to find this has been a dream or should I say, a nightmare. But, unfortunately that is not the case, we are definitely in our New Reality. I hope that you are doing your best to focus on your mental and physical health, which is so important, as we continue to "Move Forward". We are learning how much stronger and adaptable we really are!

We continue to be on the ground in the community. Thanks to the Office of Community Relations for the donations of toilet paper and masks, which we distributed at one of our partner sites, Fort Washington Baptist Church. We also provided hot meals, along with the bags of supplies, to those in need.
I shared what worked best for me personally, when the pandemic started, in this article of The Washington Informer Special Edition: Health Wellness & Nutrition Supplement, August 13, 2020. Coping suggestions are provided, which you may find helpful and check out the exciting announcement of the District 8 "Victory Gardens". which host the "MOVING FORWARD" Zoom events cited in the article, along with many other District 8 hosted events addressing mental/physical health and an array of subjects that may interest you and someone you know. We like keeping you informed!

It is that time again, a new school year starting on August 31, 2020! However, this will be a very different start to any other school year and in some ways, a continuance of how the 2019 school year ended. CEO Dr. Monica Goldson announced that Prince George's County schools are reopening with Distance Learning on August 31, 2020 and will continue until January 29, 2021. There will be a full school day, 5 days a week. Small group instruction will be provided to special groups, i.e., English language learners and special needs students.

The 2020 Prince George’s County Police Reform Work Group, created by County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, is comprised of community advocates and public officials who will develop insightful recommendations on police reform, helping our Police Department become a model for the nation.
The Work Group will be co-chaired by Maureen Lamasney, Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge, and Delegate Alonzo Washington. After a comprehensive study and review of the Police Department, the Work Group will create a recommendation report. The County Executive will receive that report no later than October 30, 2020, and use the report to determine appropriate Police Department reforms.
