Breaking District 9 News!

Today, GenOn Holdings, Inc., announced it has initiated the process of retiring coal-fire, electric generating Units 1 and 2, at the Chalk Point Generating Station facility, located in Aquasco, Md. The coal-fire units first began operations, 56 years ago, in 1964. The proposed retirement date is June 1, 2021. Although this is not a total shutdown of the facility, it is a good start in helping relieve southern Prince George’s County of having to house a disproportionate number of power plants. Council Member Harrison’s office will actively work with GenOn to increase the focus on clean-energy options, with the possibility of establishing environmentally friendly solar farms, as well as other renewable energy initiatives. There will also be an increased focus on creating additional opportunities for minority owned businesses, in the area of renewable energy.
