Prince George’s County moved to a full Phase Two reopening on Monday, June 29, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. Following the advice of our public health officials – washing our hands, wearing face coverings in public, and practicing social distancing – we are continuing a downward trend in the number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the County. We have now cautiously moved forward, upon the advice of public health officials, with a phased reopening and recovery in the County. Non-essential businesses and services have reopened with modifications that protect the health and safety of employees and residents. County businesses with questions about how to operate under the Phase Two Reopening, should reach out to Experience Prince George’s at ReopenPrinceGeorges@co.pg.md.us or call 301-925-3800. LEARN MORE

Contact tracing is a tool that health workers use to stop the spread of a disease. We are in the process of training new contact tracers to work with our Health Department to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community. If you receive a call that appears on your caller ID as “MD COVID,” it is one of our contact tracers reaching out. Please answer and take this call seriously. The head of our contact tracing operations, Angela Crankfield-Edmond, has some important information on what you should expect if a contact tracer reaches out to you. Watch our video here.

Prince George’s County is continuing to increase our completion rate for the 2020 Census! Our goal is to ensure that each and every resident is counted. You can complete your Census by phone at 844-330-2020, online at www.my2020Census.gov or by mail. It only takes 10 minutes.
Encourage your friends and family to complete their Census, too. Did you know that for every resident that goes uncounted, our County loses out on $18,250 over a 10-year period per person?? As a resident of Prince George's County, you benefit from the federal funds used for community investment. These funds impact our community through national voter representation, government services, transportation, infrastructure and job development. You can complete your census online, by mail or by phone. Your participation is private and used for statistical purposes only.

We had an awesome time with students of Bishop McNamara High School giving away 500 boxes of fresh groceries and meats to the community in May. This would not have been possible without the support of Kevin & Wanda Durant who answered the call when County Executive Angela Alsobrooks reached out seeking help during these difficult times. Thanks are owed to The Kevin Durant Charity Foundation and The Wanda Durant “The Real MVP” Charity. With over 100 student volunteers, and additional help from parents, staff and Team Hawkins, we were able to distribute all in under two hours efficiently and safely. Thank you to Dr. Marco Clark and your BMHS team for being so accommodating and dedicated to this vision and continuing to instill leadership, courage and the word of the gospel in our next generation of great leaders. Special thanks to Market Fresh Gourmet for providing the food, to Gap Busters for hand-made masks for all of our volunteers, to Mayson-Dixon Properties & Development for donating 10,000 masks to our giveaway efforts and G.S. Proctor & Associates, Inc. & Prince George's County Police Department for their continuous support. Thank you to the Prince George’s Arts & Humanities Council for their impressionable artists commemorating the event.
This Memorial Day, I visited the Glassmanor community to pay respect to the veterans the community leaders honored. “All gave some and some gave all.” I expressed my gratitude to veterans Georgia Eaves and Wilbert Mathews.
I was humbled to witness the honoring of Lyric Mikayla Jones. Lyric is a 2020 graduate of CMIT South High School and Prince George’s Community College. Lyric received from Governor Larry Hogan a Merit Scholastic Award for graduating in the top 5% of all 2020 High School graduates in the State of Maryland. She received over $400,000 in scholarships and will attend Hofstra University (NY) in the Fall. Congratulations, Lyric!
Over the last few months, I have participated in a number of protests and demonstrations in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The time is now to have the difficult, yet long overdue, discussions on Police Reform and Accountability. Racism and police brutality are unacceptable and not welcomed here in Prince George's County, however these problems go deeper than the leadership figures in public safety. I recognize the urgency to respond and eliminate the injustices that exist within our community, but it is important to take measured approaches to untangle the systemic racism that exists. I have spent significant time listening to organizers and residents from the City of Laurel down to the Town of Eagle Harbor and areas in between both virtually and in-person. I hear you and I stand with you!
Service ... It’s humbling to see how so many Prince Georgians have zealously taken to Service during this season . The good folks at Melwood Hosted a Grab and Go Grocery Giveaway with the Food4Thought Collaborative (Galilee Baptist Church , Saint Paul Baptist Church , Athletic Republic-Capital Region , Friendship Charities Foundation) last month providing groceries to 450 families and households. I salute you all for the tireless and unselfish effort. You make us #PrinceGeorgesProud
The Maryland National Capital Park Police and Prince George’s Police Department presented a Certificate of Appreciation to General Manager Paul Santone and staff Anne-Marie Smith of Ruby Tuesday in Largo for graciously serving our first responders (Park Police) and County Police lunch on June 2nd, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. County leaders and Public Safety officers truly appreciate the support from our local businesses and we as a community must all do our part to support our small businesses. We all thank you !
This week I supported G.S. Proctor & Associates in providing hot lunches for the Department of Public Works & Transportation Highway Maintenance employees to support their work during this pandemic.
Since the BEACON One-Stop unemployment application launched one week ago today, over 286,000 accounts have been activated, over 142,000 new claims have been submitted, and over 360,000 weekly claim certifications have been filed. The MD Department of Labor continues to work to answer questions and resolve issues.
Some Marylanders are still experiencing difficulties while accessing and logging into the new BEACON One-Stop, so they have created a Login Quick Start to help troubleshoot common claimant scenarios. To access this resource on our website, please visit labor.maryland.gov/employment/uibeaconlogin.pdf
On Sundays and Mondays, unemployment insurance claimants can only file weekly claim certifications. On Tuesdays through Saturdays, claimants can file new initial claims and complete all other activities. Marylanders have been experiencing minimal to no wait times on the BEACON One-Stop throughout the recent weekend.
